AN EXHIBITION to be held at Hedon Museum marking the Falklands War of 40 years ago, has prompted a search for those from Hedon who took part. The Museum seeks those members of the Armed Services and Merchant Navy who took part and lived in Hedon at the time.

Falklands War tankard

In October, following the military action that took place from April 2 to June 14 1982 in the South Atlantic, the Mayor of Hedon, Councillor Henry Vies Suggit and his wife Ann presented pewter tankards to those who took part from the town. Unfortunately, no record was kept of the number of tankards presented or the names of the recipients.

Tony Porter of Hedon Museum was one of those receiving a tankard and he is looking for other tankards and their recipients so that they can be the centrepiece of the exhibition.

Tony said: “So far, we have found seven veterans that are still with us; three Royal Marines, two from the Royal Navy and two from the Merchant Navy and most are still local too. We have also found another two who have unfortunately passed away. We also have some names that we want to confirm. We would love to make contact with those named here, or their families so that we can include everybody who should be there.

“We want to get in touch with the following people to confirm whether they took part in the campaign, lived in Hedon at the time and were presented with a tankard by the Mayor; JOHN DENT Engineer ‘Norland’, BOB REEVES Motorman ‘Norland’ and KEITH ELLIS. We would be delighted if Hedon Blog readers could help us in this search.”

The museum is also keen to trace others who may have served in the conflict from Hedon. If you have information please contact Tony Porter on 01482 898717 or at hedonhistorywalks@gmail.com. The Falkland Islands war exhibition will open at Hedon Museum on Saturday, April 2nd.

Note: The inscription on Tony Porter’s tankard, which will be similar to those that are being sought, reads: “PRESENTED TO TONY PORTER, 2nd MATE. M.V. LYCAON ON HIS RETURN FROM THE FALKLANDS CAMPAIGN BY THE MAYOR AND MAYORESS OF HEDON COUN. & MRS H.V. SUGGIT. M.M., JP. OCTOBER 1982. A JOB WELL DONE.”
