Memorial table and bench.

A MEMORIAL PICNIC TABLE and Bench has been proposed to be located at the Community Orchard on Elsie Gate Field. Hedon Town Council supports the proposal.

At last night’s Town Council meeting, Councillors heard from a mother about the tragic suicide of her teenage son. Now friends and family have raised £3,000 to place a memorial table and bench in the Community Orchard. One of his favourite places, Elsie Gate is seen as the perfect location to remember him. Installing the furniture is also intended to become part of a wider campaign raising awareness of teenage suicide. It could link in with efforts to highlight the sources of help available to troubled young people. It may help kickstart new initiatives.

The council, who will be trustees for the land, agreed to fund the secure hard-standing base for the new furniture.

After the meeting, Councillor Sarah Rommell spoke to the mother. They agreed to discuss ways that existing community initiatives might be able to work together to develop new project ideas.

We’ll bring you more information on this as the project develops.

Poor public sound at council venue.

Unfortunately, Hedon Town Council’s return to public meetings last night was marred. The 8-strong public audience could not hear clearly. Decisions taken were inaudible. Saint Augustine’s, the 800-year-old church venue is perfect for public performance and projected public oratory. But it’s far from adequate to hear normal speech, especially when muffled through face masks.

If the council intends continued use of St. Augustine’s Church as a venue, it needs to address the sound issue.

In May 2014 the council was criticised for not being accessible to those with hearing loss. In May 2021 the general public is experiencing a similar hearing loss problem!
