East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Cabinet has, on Tuesday 7 July approved, in principle, a proposal to build a new crematorium near to Preston in Holderness and will now go out to public consultation in July to support the development of a business case.
The proposed site of the crematorium off Lelley Road, near Preston, will provide a place for people to remember their loved ones, local to where they live, and will also support the economy through the creation of jobs and will seek to help address the issue of funeral poverty which affects some of our most vulnerable residents.
The new crematorium would create a site with an environmentally-conscious design and green building principles and will offer people a fitting and sensitive place to commemorate their loved ones, with proposed features including a new woodland, a memory walk and other areas for remembrance and celebration.
The council’s cabinet will discuss a further report into what would be the council’s first owned and operated crematorium at its meeting in January 2021. At that stage, the results of the consultation, the planning application process and a detailed business plan would all be available.

This application should be fully supported by residents in Preston as well as the rest of the East Riding. Anyone suffering a bereavement in the Holderness area shouldn’t have to travel out of the East Riding or through Beverley to Willerby to have a funeral service and cremation.
