Preston Community Hall reopens
Preston Community Hall re-opened on 15th September 2012

AS well as our community buildings in Hedon, the surrounding villages also have thriving centres of community which have become the focal point of local activities.

Today we look at Preston Community Hall which since its re-opening in 2012 after being refurbished has developed its range of activities and functions organised from the building.

Film Nights have proven popular with the venue transforming itself into the ‘Preston Picture Palace’ once a month to show giant-screen movies – and all for just £4 per person!

Tomorrow (Friday 23rd January 2015) the big film is Sunshine on Leith.

Geoff Catterick from the Community Hall describes the film, which features music by The Proclaimers: “Sunshine on Leith tells the story of two soldiers who return to Leith after a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Elegantly balancing poignant drama and broad comedy the movie adopts the “Mama Mia” format. The charismatic characters will, in a study in family life, be raw, romantic, and real.

“Critics wrote ‘simply glorious, the feel – fabulous film of the year’ and ‘it leaves you elated’. In a poll of our audience it was our most requested film.”

Other films in the programme up to Easter are:

  • Friday 27th February 2015 “The Railway Man”
  • Friday 27th March 2015 “Two Faces of January”
  • Friday 24th April 2015 “The Train”

All film shows start at 7.15pm. Doors open 6:45pm. Admission £4.00. Refreshments available.

Activities for small children provide a bedrock of activities at the hall with ‘My Baby can Dance‘, ‘Music with Mummy‘ and ‘Jolly Babies‘ sessions taking place on a regular weekly basis.

The Preston Women’s Institute also uses the hall as its home-base. The WI branch meets on the last Tuesday of every month at 7.30 p.m in the hall. It’s programme of speakers, presentations and demonstrations always ensures a large turn-out of ladies. The WI has become a vibrant, active group in the local community as our articles on HU12 Online reveal.

The newest group to start sessions at the hall is the Parkinson’s Disease support group which is a friendly, local meeting for sufferers and carers. Meets 1:30pm – 3:00pm on the second Wednesday of each month.

Other regular meetings at the Community Hall include the Preston Parish Council, which also has its own office at the rear of the hall.

Lots more takes place at Preston Community Hall than we have been able to feature here.
