ON Saturday 7th February 2015 it is National Libraries Day. It is a day when we can celebrate what our libraries have to offer, the role they play in our communities and give thanks for the information they provide.

National Libraries Day logoNational Libraries Day is an initiative of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). Its President, Barbara Band said “I am really excited to be thinking about National Libraries Day events because for 2015, we want to reach and involve more people than ever in order to collectively send out the message that our libraries and their professional staff are very much loved and needed.”

“The impact that libraries and librarians have on our well-being as communities and as a society is so fundamental and far-reaching; and it is vital that we recognise this. We need this expertise more than ever before in all the traditional ways, but also as we negotiate new challenges around information management and security, digital inclusiveness and much more.”

At a time when we are more likely to use the internet to search for factual and fictional reading material, National Libraries Day is an opportunity to create a ‘buzz’ around libraries and remind ourselves what they are all about. It might be a chance for people to organise a local event and interact with the vital work carried out by their library and information professionals. It could be an opportunity to remind the decision-makers and politicians that our libraries and librarians are valued! How you celebrate National Libraries Day is up to you.

BUT, of course, the day is a reminder to visit your local library – especially if you haven’t been for a while! Have a look at what is available and particularly rekindle that love of books!

One of the initiatives to show your support for libraries and the love of books is to post a #Shelfie – a photo snap of your book shelf – so here goes… 🙂

… (and consider what the photo tells you about your self!) and share it on Facebook and tweet it to Twitter with the hashtags #NLD15 and #Shelfie

Note: This article was inspired by Peter Ainscough who is encouraging the Christian public – the “People of the Good Book” – to promote and support National Libraries Day during and beyond February.
