THE LAST MATCH of the 2013 cricket season took place on Saturday 21st September 2013 when the Arthur Screeton Memorial Trophy competition took place. Our cricket commentator, Malc Ripley, reports:
A number of years have elapsed since some turned out again in their whites to play last Saturday, in the Artie Screeton Memorial Trophy to conclude the on-field activities for yet another seven months, at the Middle Lane ground.
I expect a few of them with have aches and pains, for a couple of days!?
The SHCC team batted first amassing 220 for 3 in their 30 overs, the Clubs Most Improved Player, left-hander Phil Hill cracking his third half century of the summer with 54 not out (7 x fours, 2 x sixes), Rich Rosindale making a quickfire 51 not out, with 5×4 and 3 x 6, to pave the way for leading all-rounder Lewis Duell to hit 4 x fours plus 3 x sixes, in his 54 run retired knock,
Others into two figures being Keiron Metcalfe with 10, Mike Oliver 14, and Graham Slinger a hard-hitting 21. Pete Goaten took 1 for 15, and Neil Green returned 1 for 27.
For Steve Crane’s Xl, Mark Brooks made a good-looking 25, in reply, Steve Crane 15, Phil Allison 14no, but the three were overshadowed as Club Patron, and veteran Ian Mendham, arriving at crease to hit his first ever six, over square leg, together with three boundaries in a fine unbeaten 23, as the ‘keeper certainly rolled back the years with his effort!
Promising young seamer Lee Darby performed well to return 3 for 16, Eddie Samphire causing some mirth, with his first wicket in cricket, hitting the stumps at a cost of just 9 runs, during their 127 for 9 off their 40 allotted overs.
Artie’s widow, Barbara Screeton said she was pleased that the weather had kept fine, thanked both teams for turning out in the very sporting match, before presenting the 28-year-old Trophy to Holderness team Captain Keiron Metcalfe, prior to the end of season barbecue being held.
The YCCC players autographed Bat draw was won by former all-rounder Dave Gatti. Geoff Boycott’s, Geoff Cope, popular umpire Dickie Bird, and the YCCC Director of cricket Martyn Moxon all signed the bat too!
Note: The autographs were fresh from last Thursday, at Headingley when I was a guest for the day in the Pavilion, (v Middlesex CCC,) of Geoff Boycott, as a result of me giving ‘Boycs’ all the details of his Benefit Match century, at Middle Lane, (131 caught) out of their 40 over total of 260 for 6, in September 1984, when I umpired the game with Cliff Everingham. SHCC replying with 163.
Some season stats:
Performance wise, 1st team captain Rich Ingram finished a fine summer with 838 runs, just 20 runs shy of his tally of 858 record scored two summers ago, averaging 57.20 then, but he did not hit a century this time around (albeit his 186 not out remains an all time Club record with 26 x fours and 8 x sixes, made in 2011, against Beverley CC).
Statistics show that current Walkington CC left hander Mark Brooks is second to Vice Captain Mike Oliver, who has amassed no less than 5,707 in all forms with the Hedon based outfit, with another left-hander Ingram in third spot with a total of 5,283.
Former long serving campaigner medium pacer Glen Berry, has most wickets for the 131 year old Club, in all competitions, taking some 498 wickets. What a long-term servant!
