A MARVELLOUS COLLECTION of painted landscapes is on exhibition at Hedon Museum until Wednesday 17th July 2013.
The “Big Sky” display depicts scenes from across East Yorkshire, but the Holderness area gets its deserved fair share of attention, which is perhaps not surprising considering that artist James Deighton lived in Paull for 25 years. The village and views of the Humber estuary provide the backdrop material for some of the paintings.
James explained that he prefers to sit at the actual locations whilst painting, so each captures a unique moment in time and history. My father used to work on the MV Norland and memories are evoked by one particular seascape by James, of being sat at Paull as a child waiting for that North Sea Ferry to set sail along the Humber from King George Dock, Hull – it was always a thrill knowing that Dad was aboard and the painting brought those memories flooding back. This nostalgic realism is not the case in all of the paintings, one fascinating study portrays the Shrimping boats working from Paull and is a recreation of how the place would look now if that industry had continued to thrive.
Most of the unique pieces of artwork are being offered for sale in the range from £35 to £400 and would make exceptional gifts. But James is no stranger to selling his work, he sold his first painting to a neighbour for £1 whilst only 12 years old! That was the year that he got his first set of paint brushes, which he still owns to this very day.
Whilst the “Big Sky” and the broad rolling views in East Yorkshire are the themes for this particular exhibition, the artist can also turn his 45 years of experience to painting portraits of pets on commission as well.
Hedon Museum has once again delivered a top quality exhibition of original paintings. Regulars will love the “Big Sky” display and first time visitors are encouraged to come and have a look and also see everything else that is on offer at the Hedon Museum.
