Visitors at the Silver Display Hedon Heritage Day

OVER FIFTY people visited the Heritage Day yesterday to see the Hedon Town Hall and a display of the Hedon Town Silver.

The Heritage Day and the Silver Display was arranged in honour of the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. People had also brought in several items of memorabilia from the Coronation Day on 2nd June 1953.

This Scrapbook was a delight to look through, and was presented for the exhibition by Victoria Harrison - who compiled the scrapbook when she was six years old

Also on display with the Silver was the Great Mace normally carried at Civic Functions by the Sergeant of the Mace. The Mace is carried to show that the Hedon Mayor acts with the authority of the Monarch (apparently, if the Queen is ever present, the Mace should be carried ‘upside, down’).

The current Sergeant of the Mace, Dave Young, was at the event alongside Dr Martin Craven, a Freeman of Hedon, to answer questions from the public about the ‘treasures’ that make up the Silver Collection and the other artefacts that decorate the Town Hall.

The Hedon MayorCouncillor Jim Lindop, as the 666th incumbent of that position, offered his congratulations to the Queen. He was also keen to explain to residents who had not yet seen the Hedon Silver, or the Town Hall, that they should contact the Council and their names would be put on a waiting list of those wishing to do so. The Mayor hosts occasional Silver Shows and Displays during the year.

Contact Hedon Town Council at the Town Hall from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

With many thanks to the Mayor, Cllr Jim Lindop, for taking part in this short interview – and not getting distracted by the background noise!

  1. How lovely to see our silver on display in its rightful place, long may this continue and lets hope our council can think of a local site to display it permanently for all to enjoy.

  2. The Hedon Blog is delighted to include its first ever video interview with a Hedon Mayor!

This uses a standard compact digital camera and so the sound quality is not brilliant – but I’m sure you will agree that this gives a taste of the atmosphere at the Heritage Day (watch the background), and for those that do not know the Mayor, this will serve to prove what an approachable chap he is and how keen he is to get local people involved in the town’s civic life.

With many thanks to Mr Mayor, Councillor Jim Lindop.
