SUNDAY 27th MARCH is the day of the year in 2011 on which the National Census will be based. Whether you have already filled it in or plan to imminently, then you have to complete the form based on who is in your household on this particular Sunday.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) carries out a census to find out more about the people who live in England and Wales and about the make-up of local neighbourhoods.
The results of the 2011 Census will directly affect people in this area. The information collected will be used to plan public services in the local area, including:
Schools: for children growing up now and in the future- Social housing: for families who need an affordable place to live
- Transport: getting to and from work, and for going out and about in the area
- Healthcare: facilities that everyone can access easily
- Training: for people who want to learn new skills
It’s vital that these and other services are accessible to all people and reflect the cultural diversity and a broad mix of ages and lifestyles in today’s society.
The more that is known about people in this community, the better national and local authorities can understand and meet our needs.
You’ll be able to do it online. Or by post. But you must do it. Completing the Census is compulsory.

Census collectors will visit households that have not returned their questionnaire. They can answer questions and help you fill it in.
