Council to issue strongest ever warning to Yorkshire Water over offensive odours!

“Thanks to all those who signed the petition and campaigned against the smells! Your efforts have now been rewarded” – Hedon Blog

A REPORT will go before East Riding Council’s environment and regeneration overview and scrutiny committee this morning which will express the council’s “lack of confidence” in Yorkshire Water for failing to manage and control the release of offensive odours from the Saltend Waste Water Treatment Works.

The report states that the odours from the Treatment Works have been “unacceptable this year” resulting in the highest level of recorded complaints. And while the odours are expected to be significantly reduced by the completion of the new odour control unit, the council will monitor the situation and, when needed, will respond making full use of the powers it has at its disposal to protect the public.

This is expected to be the strongest ever statement from the council on this matter and a press release is expected to be released later today that will express the council’s tough position on this matter.

The report discussed today has been produced in direct response to the 2,405 strong petition that was presented to the same council committee on 21st September  2011.

The Hedon Blog would like to thank all those residents that signed the petition, whether on paper or online, and to all those who took part in the campaign to rid our communities of these offensive odours! Your efforts have now been rewarded with the strongest possible expression of support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council – and the strongest ever warning to Yorkshire Water!

You can follow the progress of the campaign against the odours on the Hedon Blog by reading all the articles on this matter, in reverse chronological order, at the Hedon Blog at Yorkshire Water Smells.

Community asked to collect evidence of any future Yorkshire Water odour incidents : Health concerns remain unanswered

EAST RIDING COUNCIL have responded to the petition calling for action on Yorkshire Water’s odour problem from its Waste Water Treatment Works. Because future smells may constitute a ‘statutory nuisance’ problem, then local communities would be asked to collect and give reliable evidence of any problems. The Report also raises some unresolved issues about the health impacts of the odours during summer 2011.

Yorkshire Water Smells – No complaints recorded

IN THE LATEST update from Yorkshire Water’s Hull and Saltend News webpage then NO COMPLAINTS about odours have been recorded in the week 17th October to 23rd October 2011. This means that for the whole of October only 1 complaint has been reported.

This is similar to the situation in October 2010 with 1 odour complaint, but far better than previous years with 25 complaints in the same month in 2009, and 20 each in October 2008 and October 2007.

The Hedon Blog has reproduced the latest odour report from Yorkshire Water below.

Yorkshire Water Smells – Good news…. but we’ve not forgotten!

REMEMBER THIS from August this year….?

THE GOOD NEWS is that smells from the Yorkshire Water Waste Water Treatment Works do not seem to have caused any major upset in the last few weeks.

In the three weeks from 19th September – 9th October 2011 then there have been only two recorded complaints according to Yorkshire Water’s Hull and Saltend News. Of course this may not reflect reality because people do not always report the smells they suffer.

However, we do not want to forget the 11 years of odour problems from the Saltend site or the ruined summer of 2011. And we want to ensure that Yorkshire Water don’t forget either!

It should be a cause for celebration when the new odour control unit goes online at the Treatment Works in November/December – but it’s also a perfect time to remind Yorkshire Water of their past misdemeanours! So that is when it is proposed to present Yorkshire Water with our Wall of Shame!

The Hedon Blog will ensure that those in authority at Yorkshire Water are sent copies of the comments contained on the Wall of Shame. Copies will be also sent to the media and other bodies such as OFWAT the regulator of the water and sewerage industry in England.

People are still sending us comments to add to the Wall of Shame – but if you have not yet sent us a comment of your experience of the smells in the past, then please do!

Cleeve Road, Hedon drains problem sorted

AN ONGOING PROBLEM with the drains in Cleeve Road, Hedon has been sorted according to Yorkshire Water.

Anita had complained about the problem with the sewers in Cleeve Road: “I am sick to death of having to drive through filthy water which pours out of the drains.”

Yorkshire Water has now replied and said that work to tackle the problem has now been completed. Stephen Shaw for the company replied to Anita and explained what had been causing the problem:

“The problem was to do with the Sewerage Pumping Station which discharged into the manhole outside No 9 Cleeve Road. The pumping regime has been altered to allow the pumps to pump more frequently but with less volume. This means that there is less flow entering the downstream public sewer stopping the flow surcharging through the manhole.”

Yorkshire Water – Notice of Pea Harvest 2012

“Summer 2012 – I’ll be back!”

Pea Pod Costume

AFTER A BUMPER CROP of peas from the harvest this year, the Yorkshire Post reports that:

“Farmers have been ploughing peas back into the ground after an astonishing set of harvests. An unprecedented pea crop was the most spectacular result of an unexpectedly good combination of circumstances for many growers this year… Birds Eye is offering contracts for hundreds of extra hectares next year, to meet a new order from Italy.”

So this article serves to give NOTICE to Yorkshire Water that the potential for SMELLS from its Waste Water Treatment Works will be even greater next year…

… so BE PREPARED Yorkshire Water! Make sure that your £3.5m Odour Control Unit is SWITCHED ON next summer, and get those chemical dowsers ready… it could be a really smelly summer 2012!

Grumpy Hedon Blogger

Editor’s Note: Yorkshire Water blamed concentrated effluent produced from the seasonal pea harvest for the most appalling smells from its Saltend site during the summer 2011. See Pea pong – odour misery! on HU12.

Yorkshire Water Smells – Petition Success!

THE PETITION encouraging East Riding Council to declare Yorkshire Water a ‘Statutory Nuisance’ for its persistent odour problems from Saltend, has been soundly supported.

The Petition, which was launched on July 31st 2011, has been signed by 2,405 people. Over 1,000 of these signed online.

The Petition has been delivered to East Riding Council today and will be presented to the Council’s Environment and Regeneration Overview and Scrutiny Sub-Committee at its meeting on Wednesday 21st September, 10am at County Hall, Beverley.

A lobby of Councillors will be held from 9:30am that morning to convince them that local people are angry and demand to be protected from future odour incidents.

Odour Control Unit £3.5m

Following the opening of Yorkshire Water’s new Odour Control Unit in
December, then local people need to know that the Council will act swiftly on their behalf if any new odour problems take place and use Statutory Nuisance powers to tackle the water company .

Yorkshire Water’s defence that they are spending £3.5m on managing odours from the Waste Water Treatment Works, will only ‘hold water’ if odours are prevented in 2012 and in future years.

Thanks to all those that have supported the Yorkshire Water Smells campaign.

Yorkshire Water: Sludge and Sewage issues

YORKSHIRE WATER have again become the targets of complaints from local residents concerned about sludge and sewage issues:

SLUDGE: James told us of muddy tyre tracks coming out of the Waste Water facility at Saltend on Sat August 20th. The tracks came straight out of the gates of the plant and halfway down the outside lane of Hedon Road towards Hedon – eventually wearing out just before reaching BP roundabout. This photo taken later when the traffic had worn them down and presumably carried the mud away, shows the remaining tracks:

James asks: “As we all know what the plant deals with, I am concerned quite what this vehicle had spread on the road! So much for a plant that cares about the environment”.

SEWAGE: Anita has complained about the problem with the sewers in Cleeve Road, Hedon: “I would request that Yorkshire Water sort out the long-standing and seemingly endless problem with the sewers in Cleeve Road, Hedon. I am sick to death of having to drive through filthy water which pours out of the drains.”

The Hedon Blog has also received reports of a similar problem of “raw sewage” having come from the drains on Tailer Road in Hedon.

Yorkshire Water have said that the ‘muddy tyre tracks’ spotted by James should not have happened and the company should not be messing up the roads. However, a company spokesman has confirmed that the mud is not harmful. It is the prior-treated ‘sludge’ produced at the Saltend site which is then taken away to be used in making compost.
