The Yorkshire Flag was designed in the 1960s. However, the flying of the Yorkshire Flag has only been legally permissible since June 2008. Prior to that, you might have faced prosecution for breaking planning permission and ‘advertising’ without permission!

The village of Sproxton near Helmsley was the location of a ‘battle’ to fly the Yorkshire Flag in 2003. Ryedale district council attempted to prosecute a local farmer for flying the unregistered flag without permission. They retreated on the prosecution after dozens of villagers ordered flags and flew them in protest!

The traditional Lancashire flag was never recognised as an official flag. The image of a red rose on a white background had already been registered by the town of Montrose in Scotland! Therefore Lancashire’s official flag is now registered as a red rose on a gold field.

Yorkshire Day 2010 in Hedon!

YORKSHIRE DAY celebrated in Hedon on Sunday 1st August 2010.

The celebrations are held as a way of making people more aware of “all things Yorkshire” and the county’s proud history and traditional heritage.

Hedon Town Council has invited civic guests from the whole of Yorkshire who will be coming to Hedon for a parade from the Market Place at 10.15am followed by a Church service, led by the Bishop of Hull, in St. Augustine’s Church at 11.00am.

St. Augustine’s is known as “The King of Holderness” and will be open to the public, including its Belfry Tower, from 2pm.

Yorkshire Day is also when the ‘declarations of integrity‘ should be read in five different dialects from modern English to old Norse. The readings commence at the time that coincides with the number of years since the first recorded reference to the three Ridings of Yorkshire in the year 876. This year following tradition it should be at 11.34am.

Evening celebrations will start at 6.00pm on Market Hill with Frankie Dean and his Mississippi Dixielanders Jazz Band providing family entertainment in New Orleans style – not exactly Yorkshire, but fantastic all the same! Other stalls and refreshments will be available.

A traditional ‘hog roast’ will be cooked for the evening. And to signify the importance of the event, the Hedon Beacon will be lit at 9.15pm, followed by a fireworks Grand Finale!

Hedon Town Council says: “This is a really prestigious event and the first time it has been held in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Come along and celebrate all things Yorkshire !!!”

So lets get out our white roses and Yorkshire Puddings and get ready for a real regional celebration in Hedon!
