Happy Yorkshire Day!

TODAY IS YORKSHIRE DAY!  

It is the day when the declarations of integrity should be read in five different dialects from modern English to old Norse whilst facing towards the county’s ancient capital of York.

The declaration commences at the time that coincides with the number of years since the first recorded reference to the three Ridings of Yorkshire in the year 876 a.d. This year following tradition [876+1135 = 2011] it is being published  at 11.35am.

I, the Hedon Blogger, being a resident of the East Riding of Yorkshire declare: That Yorkshire is three Ridings and the City of York, with these Boundaries of 1135 years standing; That the address of all places in these Ridings is Yorkshire; That all persons born therein or resident therein and loyal to the Ridings are Yorkshiremen and women; That any person or corporate body which deliberately ignores or denies the aforementioned shall forfeit all claim to Yorkshire status.These declarations made this Yorkshire Day 2011. God Save the Queen!”

Royal Bank Holiday Street Party in Hedon?

UPDATE: See Royal Wedding Party

FRIDAY APRIL 29th 2011 is the date set aside for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The day has been declared a Bank Holiday by the Government (although a law is still required to make the Royal holiday a legal requirement) and people will already be making their plans to on how to spend the day and long weekend.

In Hedon there has been some talk about the town centre being closed to traffic for the day and the main streets being turned into a Royal Wedding Street Party zone!

The town celebrated Yorkshire Day in style in August 2010 – the Royal wedding would seem to be another opportunity to bring together people in Hedon in celebration.

It would be a massive task to organise in just four months and would need the active involvement and support of the Town Council and local businesses? What do you think?

Yorkshire Day at the Races – in Lincolnshire!

FORTY EIGHT intrepid Yorkshire men and women invaded Lincolnshire’s only racecourse at Market Rasen on Yorkshire Day 2010 to attend its Family Funday horse racing fixture.

This Annual Charity Coach trip took place on the 1st August from the Station pub organised by Jim Lindop. The event is held to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Money was raised by selling bus-stop type cards within the pub. Many people on the coach commented how much they had enjoyed the day with £182 raised on the coach alone, the total amount was the best yet £740.

“It was a fabulous day out with everyone having a great time” says Jim.

Banks – first Hedon “Yorkshire Puddin’ Awards” of 2010

YORKSHIRE DAY 2010 in Hedon was an undoubted success. However, there was one ‘downer’ on Sunday 1st August.

There are only three automated teller machines in Hedon town centre, and none of them were working at 7pm on Sunday evening! Each seemingly had a different fault but the result was the same – no cash!

Those planning to celebrate Yorkshire Day and buy from the local stalls in the Market Hill fête area – or indeed visit the local pubs – may have been left without money to spend on this occasion.

This reveals just how vulnerable small towns and villages can be in cases like this with reliance on just a few bank machines.

So for this reason HSBC plc and Lloyds TSB (both have announced massive pre-tax profits in the UK this week) each get the Hedon Blog’s first “Yorkshire Puddin’ Awards” of 2010!

Yorkshire Day Success in Hedon

HEDON FOLK ENJOY FEAST OF FLAGS, FIREWORKS AND YORKSHIRE FUN!

HUNDREDS TURNED OUT on Ivy Lane last night to watch the fireworks in Hedon in a fitting finale to Yorkshire Day 2010.

Earlier revellers had enjoyed the stalls at Market Hill and the entertainment provided by Frankie Dean and his Mississippi Dixielanders Jazz Band.

The morning saw the Medley of Mayors parade by civic leaders from across the region.

The Hedon Beacon was lit as a prelude to the fireworks which ended a very successful day for the town. Congratulations to Hedon Town Council for organising the event.

Flying the flag for Yorkshire Day

THE SPIRIT OF Yorkshire is being felt across the the town with only one day left until Yorkshire Day in Hedon.

These local buildings are ‘flying’ the Yorkshire Flag with pride!

The Yorkshire Flag was designed in the 1960s. However, the flying of the Yorkshire Flag has only been legally permissible since June 2008. Prior to that, you might have faced prosecution for breaking planning permission and ‘advertising’ without permission!

The village of Sproxton near Helmsley was the location of a ‘battle’ to fly the Yorkshire Flag in 2003. Ryedale district council attempted to prosecute a local farmer for flying the unregistered flag without permission. They retreated on the prosecution after dozens of villagers ordered flags and flew them in protest!

The traditional Lancashire flag was never recognised as an official flag. The image of a red rose on a white background had already been registered by the town of Montrose in Scotland! Therefore Lancashire’s official flag is now registered as a red rose on a gold field.

East Riding Council Chairman to attend Yorkshire Day in Hedon

THE CHAIRMAN of the East Riding Council will be attending Yorkshire Day 2010 in the town next Sunday as a guest of the Hedon Town Mayor and Council.

Council Chairman David Rudd will be returning to Hedon, the town he grew up in, in order to take part in the civic parade along with other civic dignataries from around Yorkshire.

The Chairman will be resplendent in his official ‘mayoral’ type robes and civic chain of office. The 18-carat gold chain has approximately 200 coloured stones mainly collected from Hornsea beach and was designed by Miss Jacquline Stiegar over three months in 1977.

Since its creation in 1996, East Riding of Yorkshire Council took the decision not to call their Civic Head a Mayor but decided upon the title of Chairman. It is the Chairman’s duty to represent and promote East Riding of Yorkshire Council at all Civic and Ceremonial occasions as well as chair the Council Meetings which are held every two months.

Councillor David Rudd was elected in May 2010 and serves for a year. If you can’t wait until Sunday and want to see the Chairman in his official regalia and wearing the chain of office, then have a look over at the Beverley website HU17.Net.

Following an official Reception at breakfast time, the Civic Parade will kick off the public events at the Market Place, Hedon at 10.15am on Yorkshire Day Sunday 1st August.
