Community Fund – Yorkshire Water Waste Water Treatment Works

GRANTS from £100 – £5,000 will be made available for community projects under Yorkshire Water’s proposed new Community Fund being established to benefit Hedon, Preston, Paull and the Marfleet area of East Hull.

The first meeting to discuss the new Community Fund and establish the decision-making Committee took place last night at the Saltend Waste Water Treatment Works. While the fine details of the criteria are still being considered, the outline of the new funding stream has been agreed:

  • £50,000 will be dispensed in grants over two years – £25,000 per year (running from April – March each year).
  • Minimum grant £100 – Maximum grant £5,000.
  • Organisations will be encouraged to apply for projects that can demonstrate that they benefit people living in the following post code areas – HU9 5, HU9 4, HU12 8, HU12 9, HU11 4.
  • Grants will not be given for salaries or ongoing running costs of a project.
  • Parish and Town Councils will be excluded from applying.
  • Projects must be able to demonstrate some long-lasting benefit to communities i.e. applications for one-off events would not be supported.
  • For those groups asking for larger grants, then preference will be given to projects that also bring in additional funding from other sources.
  • Funding ’rounds’ will be established with clear deadlines for when applications should be submitted. Each round will be 6-weeks long during which groups will be invited to make applications.

The meeting facilitated by the Yorkshire Water Community Engagement Team, was attended by Councillors from East Riding Council (South West Holderness Ward), Hedon Town Council, Preston Parish Council and Paull Parish Council. Councillors from the Hull City Council (Marfleet Ward) had been invited but did not attend. These Councillors will form the main membership of the decision-making Committee. East Riding Councillor Mike Bryan was elected its Chair.

The Committee will meet again on the 28th May to consider the details of the criteria which will determine how applications are assessed and the guidance that will be given to those applying for funding.

The first round of the new Community Fund is not likely to be open for applications until June 2012. However, groups that already have an idea for a project can send a brief outline as an expression an interest, to Dafydd Williams from Yorkshire Water’s Community Engagement Team at e-mail: dafydd.williams@yorkshirewater.co.uk and further information and application packs can be sent out when available if applicable.

Public Hearings – Boundary Changes

THE PUBLIC HEARINGS into the proposed boundary changes take place today and tomorrow (24th/25th October 2011) at Hull City Hall.

See the Boundary Commission website for details at Public Hearings, Hull for details and a draft timetable.

For some background information visit HU12 at Boundaries Debate.

Tomorrow should be particularly interesting when between 1pm and 2:30pm Karl Turner MP (for East Hull) and Graham Stuart MP (Beverley & Holderness) will both be speaking.

Boundary Changes: MP strongly opposes move to bring Hedon into East Hull

GRAHAM STUART MP says he was shocked by the changes to Parliamentary constituency boundaries proposed by the Boundary Commission for England.

In a news statement issued today the Beverley and Holderness MP says he is particularly concerned about plans to include Hedon in a largely urban constituency around the city of Hull.

The MP said, “I know we all expected some changes to our constituencies, but what we got was far more radical, and, to my mind, unnecessary. I strongly oppose bringing South West Holderness into Kingston upon Hull East. It is not a natural fit and the Boundary Commission needs to rethink its recommendation.”

He concluded, “I am interested in finding out more about what my constituents think about the Boundary Review. Just from what I have heard today, I think people will have strong views on the matter.”

Proposed that Hedon joins new East Hull Parliamentary Constituency

UNDER PROPOSALS published today by the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) then the South West Holderness Ward (Hedon, Preston, Paull, etc) would be included in the Kingston Upon Hull East constituency for Parliamentary elections from 2015 (when the next General Election will be held).

Paull – A “Reserve Site” in Humber Enterprise Zone

Paull fields - Possible development site for Enterprise Zone?

THE HUMBER LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) has published maps of the Humber Enterprise Zone. These latest charts list the 80 hectare site near Paull as a “Reserve Site” (No 4 on the map).

The LEP told us via its temporary website what this means:

“The reserve site was included in case it wasn’t possible to have one of the other sites ready in time (to benefit from the Enterprise Zone tax breaks, companies must begin occupying by April 2015). At the moment, unless there are problems with one of the other sites, it won’t be included in the Enterprise Zone. However, it is still there for development.”

Whilst this news means that it is less likely that the Humber Enterprise Zone will be developed as close to Paull as previously thought, it does not diminish the case for the village (plus Hedon, Preston and the whole South West Holderness area) being fully prepared to take advantage of any benefits that the Enterprise Zone may bring.

A suggestion has been made on Twitter (by James Baron) that a working group is established to ensure that the area is in the best possible position to grasp any opportunities available through the Enterprise Zone – to make sure that local communities and businesses can benefit.

This would seem to be a very sensible and pro-active proposal. What do Blog readers think?

New Councillors say “Thank You” to supporters

MIKE BRYAN and JOHN DENNIS were elected as our new Conservative Councillors for the East Riding on the 5th May.

They have sent the following message to supporters:

“We’d like to say a sincere thank you to all those willing volunteers who delivered thousands of leaflets around the Ward on our behalf and to say that without them, South West Holderness would probably still not have a Conservative Councillor representing them, and of course many thanks too to all those who voted for us on the day.”

ALSO RE-ELECTED on the day was Independent ANN SUGGIT pictured here after her election success at the count in Beverley.
