Stop the Stench say Local Ward Councillors

THE LOCAL CONSERVATIVE COUNCILLORS have just issued a brief statement following their meeting with Yorkshire Water today:

Local Ward Councillors, Cllr Mike Bryan and Cllr John Dennis, determined to bring an end to the dreadful odour problems caused by the Waste Water Treatment Works at Saltend, have brought Yorkshire Water, Graham Stuart MP and East Riding of Yorkshire Council officials together to get matters sorted once and for all.

At the meeting which took place on Friday 5th August 2011 in Beverley Councillors took Yorkshire Water to task demanding they make themselves available in Hedon at a drop-in within the very near future to give local residents the opportunity to air their views and concerns. They have also requested Yorkshire Water provide a long term plan on how they will manage their process more efficiently in the future.

Yorkshire Water Smells! – Campaign update three days in!

THE PETITION has really taken off and captured the imagination of the public who are sick to death of the foul odours from the Waste Water Treatment Works!

At 8:30am this morning (4th August 2011) 632 people had signed the online petition and 412 of those had asked to be kept updated about the campaign by e-mail.

There are dozens of people out collecting signatures all over Hull and Holderness as people have taken their initiative, printed off the petitions – or started their own – and got neighbours and friends to sign.

Lots of shops and businesses have taken petitions for customers to sign. The Hedon ones – that we know about – are listed here on our Business Page. If you know of others – please contact the Blog so we can at least acknowledge their support.

There are 542 members of the Facebook Group: Yorkshire water needs to sort the smell out and a desire to make this a real Hull and Holderness campaign.

In Hedon we plan to hold a meeting for those wanting to help organise the campaign on TUESDAY 9th AUGUST at 6:30pm in the town (details will follow soon)!  It is hoped that those organising in Hull, Preston and Paull will attend. We will be organising a bigger public event later in the next few weeks so everyone can show their disgust with Yorkshire Water’s stink!

People are sending in their stories of how their health has been affected by the smells! Thanks – this is important evidence in getting the problem declared a ‘statutory nuisance’ – Please keep your stories coming in at hedonblog@gmx.com.

That’s it for now – but please keep adding your comments on stuff that has been missed.

Have the Waste Water Smells affected your health?

PEOPLE HAVE SENT IN COMMENTS saying that the Yorkshire Water Smells have made them physically sick; Asthmatics have complained of breathing difficulties !

We want to collect and investigate these stories to find out if the smells have – or do – pose any threat to health.

If you have had an unpleasant experience and are willing to share it – then please e-mail hedonblog@gmx.com – or even send us in a video report of your experience via a link to your YouTube!

Yorkshire Water Smells – Angry East Hull residents form Facebook campaign group

FACEBOOK has galvanised hundreds of Hull and Holderness residents into an online campaign against Yorkshire Water’s foul stinks.

The odours from the Waste Water Treatment Works at Saltend have sickened residents and prompted angry comments from neighbours and friends. This conversation has also materialised on Facebook where East Hull residents have set up a campaigning group.

Over 440 people have already joined the Facebook Group Yorkshire water needs to sort the smell out and residents are already talking about a campaign of non-payment of waterbills (or the sewage element of the waterbill) until Yorkshire Water gets the odours eliminated.

With calls for a march and protests at the Saltend site and campaigning groups being set up, this looks like being a massive campaign bringing together residents in Hull and Holderness.

The petition has already attracted hundreds of signatures and individuals are getting their neighbours and friends to sign. They have been printed off from this website and placed in shops and pubs across Hull and Holderness.

If you do have petitions in your shop or pub then please download our simple poster (see picture) to let people know. There are other campaign resources available at Campaign Resources.

THE YORKSHIRE WATER SMELLS – PETITION is now CLOSED. It will be handed in to the East Riding Council on Fri 9th September and presented to Council Committee on Wed 21st September. You can still get the latest CAMPAIGN NEWS and enter your … Continue reading

Yorkshire Water Smells Campaign hits the news!

RESIDENTS CAMPAIGNING against the Yorkshire Water Saltend Smells were in the news today! And it all started from a simple text message from Jo Gardner to BBC Radio Humberside complaining about the odours. That text message lead to interviews with radio, TV and press.

Cllr Ann Suggit, BBC's Olivia Cubberley, Jo and Zak Gardner

BBC Radio Humberside interviewed Jo from Paull and Ray Duffill from Hedon in the Market Place this morning about the problem of the smells and the campaign to get them eliminated. They were joined by Hedon Mayor and East Riding Councillor Ann Suggit who spoke about the 11-year campaign to get Yorkshire Water to comply with its previous no smells pledges.

The campaigners then whizzed off to Paull where a group of Main Street residents explained to BBC Look North about the effects of the smells on their quality of life.

The Hull Daily Mail was next to cover the story with photos taken in front of the treatment works.
