BP at Saltend fined £30,000 over gases leak

BP CHEMICALS has been fined £30,000 at Hull Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to a leak of Syngas containing carbon monoxide from its plant at Saltend in 2009.

Between 10th November and 11th December 2009, a total of 572 tonnes of combustible Syngas was released into the atmosphere from BP’s Saltend chemical works when a valve failed. But the Magistrates Court, which met last Friday 22nd July, heard that there were no alarms or procedures in place to detect the release. This resulted in a lengthy period before the leak was discovered.

The release of gases consisted of 324 tonnes of carbon monoxide, 175 tonnes of carbon dioxide, eight tonnes of methane and 65 tonnes of hydrogen. The combination of these gases which make up Syngas have the potential to be highly flammable.

The leak was only discovered  on the 7th December when a technician attempted to take a sample from a ‘cooling water return line’, and his personal carbon monoxide alarm was activated.

Speaking after the case, Darren Leng, regulatory officer at the Environment Agency said:

“Whilst on this occasion there was no impact on the environment or human health, we take breaches of environmental permits very seriously, and always take action where appropriate.”

BP said this was a single incident and there was no breach of air quality standard for carbon monoxide. No harm was caused to employees or members of the public, and that environmental impact was minimal. The chemicals giant also made changes at the plant to prevent this from happening again.

BP was also ordered to pay court costs of £5,220 to the Environment Agency, which brought the case.

Yorkshire Water Smells – What residents are saying

THE SMELLS from the Yorkshire Water Waste Water Treatment Works have been particularly bad again over the last three weeks.

Since 27th June there have been 114 complaints recorded at Yorkshire Water. Fix My Street has captured the mood of  some disgusted residents:

“What a stink, the directors of the site should live near it to see what it’s like. Keep your windows closed folks, it’s a smelly one today!”

“Plant stinking again.”

“This really is getting ridiculous, are we living in Victorian England. This obnoxious smell was supposedly being dealt with yet, the smell just seems to be getting worse.”

“The stench coming from the waste treatment plant on thursday 30 june at 7pm was disgusting and foul.”

“Unbearable smells”

“I don’t know what going on at yorkshire water, but the stench from the treatment works for the last ten days has been disgusting. Nobody should have to live with smells like these every day. this is supposed to be the 21st century, not the sixteen hundreds when they tipped sewage into the streets.”

“Would you want to sit outside and have a meal with smells like these everyday. You try and run a business with this stench on your doorstep.”

Yorkshire Water has highlighted that it is the pea harvesting season with subsequent increased levels of slurry being discharged by processing factories into the city’s sewage network. This has also coincided with a mechanical issue with their chemical dosing equipment which has reduced the efficiency of the odour control unit.

The Yorkshire Water Hull and Saltend News web page does explain that the system is now working again and performing well. They say:

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience this incident may have caused. Should you wish to discuss this further, please contact us on 08451 24 24 24.”

Keep reporting the smells – so Yorkshire Water can act quickly to tackle any incident.

Humber Enterprise Zone… the Paull site

YESTERDAY THE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED that it had received 29 bids for ten Enterprise Zones it will support to bring economic growth and jobs to specific areas.

The Humber Enterprise Zone is one of these bidding for funding and is described as the Humber Renewable Energy Super Cluster and is believed to cover 10 potential development sites in Hull as well as area on the South bank of the Humber.

The 10 Hull sites under consideration include the potential site for the Siemens wind turbine factory, but – according to the Hull Daily Mail –  also includes “a largely undeveloped 49-hectare site at Paull east of Saltend”.

The Google map image below  shows the area under consideration with Paull at the Southern tip of the blue line (which indicates the road bordering the development site).

The site is currently used for growing crops and is bordered by a popular riverside walk connecting the village to Saltend / Hedon.

Whilst the argument for jobs and economic development is a strong one – the affects on Paull of such large-scale development on its doorstep needs to be carefully considered.

Support BP RUFC Charity Fun Day – The Miracle of Smiles!

THIS BEAUTIFUL LITTLE GIRL is full of smiles – but she never nearly survived to delight us with these!

Eva Rose Lindop was born on Friday, 17th December 2010. Following a series of fits she was rushed into Hull Royal and then at only three days old to Leeds General Infirmary where she had a 3-hour operation to remove a blood hemorrhage from the brain.

Following intensive care she was sent home on Thursday 23rd December, and as the smile tells us, she appears to have made a fabulous recovery.

Proud Hedon Grandad Jim Lindop has shared this story with us to encourage people to attend the (click link for details) Charity Fun Day at the BP Rugby Union Football Club ground at Eastside, Saltend on Saturday 9th July 2011 from 2pm.

Money raised at this family friendly event will go towards the Paediatric High Dependency Unit at Hull Royal Infirmary and the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Leeds.

Support this event – help both hospital units to continue to provide little miracles like they did for Eva!

Proposed Wind Turbines on Staithes Road, Saltend – Preston Meeting

PRESTON PARISH COUNCIL is holding a public event for village residents to see the proposed plans for the construction of two 55 metre high wind turbines (with a maximum tip-height of 85m) on land West Of the Limes Farm, Staithes Road, Saltend, Preston (South).

The proposed site location is to the North of the Yorkshire Water Waste Water Treatment Works – which already has one operational wind turbine.

Wiltshire-based Countryside Solutions, who are making the application, say that they have considered all the likely impacts of the development on the local landscape, including noise and the effects of the shadow-flicker from the rotating blades.

However, residents will be able to make their own minds up at the event on Tuesday 7th June 2011 which starts at 7pm at the Preston Community Hall.
