Monster Wheels accident risk in Preston

MONSTER WHEELS get a bit too close for comfort at times when you stand on the crossroads in Preston!

This photo typifies the wheels confronting pedestrians as you walk along the narrow pathways of streets at the Preston crossroads (junction between B1240 and Staithes Rd/School Rd). It can be quite un-nerving – if not terrifying! – to be so close to such monster wheels!

Preston resident John Hockless thinks that the current situation, with an established (Heavy Goods Vehicle) HGV route  going right through the village from East to West, means that serious accidents are inevitable!

John said: “People of Preston must be made aware of the risks before someone is dragged under the wheels of one of these monsters.”

The decision to establish the HGV route through the village was apparently made in the year 2000 following a consultation process which involved a major meeting being held in the village. However, the attendees at that meeting did not have eleven years experience of being subject to major traffic flowing through the centre. So perhaps it is time to review that decision and look at new options for making Preston roads safer!?

The Hedon Blog has asked East Riding Council for further information about traffic flows and accident rates – but we also need to hear from residents in the village about their concerns and experiences

Cupcake Class Success

THE SECRETS to a good cupcake recipe were revealed at a Family Cupcakes Creations Class hosted recently by the South Holderness Adult Education Centre, on Station Road, Preston.

Making, tasting and decorating cupcakes took place during a three-hour session involving 12 families using the excellent kitchen facilities at the technology college. The class was perfect for beginners and this picture sent in by her Grandma, shows 10-year-old Chloe’s creations.

The Hedon Blogger was even sent one to taste – Yum!

Ripper investigator publishes work on Preston Murder Mystery

DID JACK THE RIPPER STRIKE in Long Lane, Preston in 1891?

This is the question posed following the publication of the article Preston murder mystery in Ripperologist magazine by this Blog in April 2011.

Mike Covell at Mary Jane Langley's grave

On Monday 1st August 2011, on the 120th anniversary of Preston girl Mary Jane Langley’s slaughter, Mike Covell, the region’s very own “Jack the Ripper” expert, has published his findings on his Ripper Casebook Blog: From Hell, From Hull.

This is a slice of macabre local history – with a potential link to the notorious Whitechapel murders – that in all likelihood would have remained lost and hidden from view were it not for the stirling efforts of Mike Covell.

Read his article: The Murder of Mary Jane Langley.
