Preston Christmas Lights

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS in Preston get switched on this week.

The Christmas Tree will be lit up in All Saints Church yard at 7:30pm on Thursday 1st December 2011 and 21 mini-trees will be lit up in the village. The mini-trees and lights have been provided through the co-operation of residents, local businesses and the Parish Council.

Enterprise Zone to include Paull and Preston…

THE HULL MAIL is reporting today that new Humber Enterprise Zone proposals will include sites at Brough, Paull and Preston in the East Riding.

The Hedon Blog reported earlier this month on new plans to develop Hedon Haven as ‘employment land’ and in September on the potential to develop a 80 hectare site near Paull as part of the Enterprise Zone.

The report in the Mail indicates that these developments are now clearly on the agenda. Residents in the town (and those in Preston and Paull) now need more information and need to ensure that they can take full advantage of any benefits that the Enterprise Zone may bring – whilst opposing any measures that might be to the detriment of the area.

Breaking news… teachers suspended at South Holderness over Facebook use

THE HULL DAILY MAIL has broken a story about two teachers being suspended at South Holderness Technology College in Preston.

The teachers were apparently suspended after school students passed around comments made by them on Facebook. The comments have been described as “a crude Facebook exchange about their pupils” by the newspaper!

Still seeking views of Preston Residents – Traffic Fears

FOLLOWING OUR article in July on Monster Wheels accident risk in Preston and our request for information on traffic flows through the village, the East Riding Council has provided the following data about the overall numbers of crashes, which shows five serious accidents and fourteen slight accidents since 2006:

Do these figures reveal the full story about this problem? Do they redress the fears amongst villagers about dangerous traffic? We need to hear from residents about their experiences and concerns about traffic in the village.

NatWest CommunityForce: Vote for local projects!

VOTING HAS OPENED TODAY in the NatWest bank’s CommunityForce charity initiative – and local projects are asking for your support!

CommunityForce is organised by the NatWest to support local communities. It gives charities, projects and groups an opportunity to promote their work, the chance to access funds and skills as well as volunteers to make a lasting difference in their local communities.

By applying to CommunityForce hundreds of local charities and projects (three from each area) stand to win an award of £6,000 each with the winners decided by public vote and announced in November.

The following good causes are applying for support from this area:

Paull Village Hall is applying for new projection and sound equipment which can be used in the existing hall, and in the new purpose-built centre if their Big Lottery Fund application is successful. Vote at http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/883.

Preston Community Hall would spend the money on improving its toilet and kitchen facilities – without these improvements the Community Hall may face closure! Vote at http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/5389.

Preston Playing Field Charity wants to upgrade its electrical and gas installation so that it can continue being a focal point for community sports and recreation. Vote at http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/5711.

Boyes Lane Public Recreation Ground, Keyingham, hopes to create a pond and wild meadow area that can serve as a haven for wildlife and be enjoyed by the community. Vote at http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/2344.

The Girl Guiding Holderness Division would like to run a division day out, pack holiday and camp, with all its members able to take part, whatever their experience. This can be very costly to the girls and their families, and the Division would like to offer them assistance. Vote at http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/3240.

The Y-us? youth project based in Flinton wish to make a DVD illustrating the first warning signs that young people might have started using drugs. They want to script, film and produce the DVD, then show it to parents in as many schools as possible. Vote at: http://communityforce.natwest.com/project/3068.

VOTING OPENS TODAY on the CommunityForce website, where you’ll be able to view all of the applications made in your local area. If you are unable to access the website to vote, contact the CommunityForce helpline on 0800 2100 246. Customers with hearing and speech impairments can contact us by Minicom number 0800 0155 545. They will be happy to let you know which charities, projects and groups have applied in your area.

Each person can vote up to three times, in any area. You can only vote once for each cause.

Paull – A “Reserve Site” in Humber Enterprise Zone

Paull fields - Possible development site for Enterprise Zone?

THE HUMBER LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) has published maps of the Humber Enterprise Zone. These latest charts list the 80 hectare site near Paull as a “Reserve Site” (No 4 on the map).

The LEP told us via its temporary website what this means:

“The reserve site was included in case it wasn’t possible to have one of the other sites ready in time (to benefit from the Enterprise Zone tax breaks, companies must begin occupying by April 2015). At the moment, unless there are problems with one of the other sites, it won’t be included in the Enterprise Zone. However, it is still there for development.”

Whilst this news means that it is less likely that the Humber Enterprise Zone will be developed as close to Paull as previously thought, it does not diminish the case for the village (plus Hedon, Preston and the whole South West Holderness area) being fully prepared to take advantage of any benefits that the Enterprise Zone may bring.

A suggestion has been made on Twitter (by James Baron) that a working group is established to ensure that the area is in the best possible position to grasp any opportunities available through the Enterprise Zone – to make sure that local communities and businesses can benefit.

This would seem to be a very sensible and pro-active proposal. What do Blog readers think?
