Withernsea to Hull railway journey – nostalgic delight!

THIS VIEW FROM A CAB OF A DIESEL TRAIN travelling the Withernsea to Hull route is a nostalgic delight! Taken in 1957 the whole journey is speeded up to take just over 4 minutes. Expect to see Hedon about 1:45 in – but don’t blink!

This video was found on YouTube by Justin Macartney of Seaside FM 105.3 and shows perhaps one of the first journeys by a diesel engine following British Rail’s ‘dieselisation’ from 1955 onwards.

The Hull and Holderness passenger service was closed following the Beeching report (published in 1963) and the last passenger train ran on 19th October 1964. See Wikipedia for more information

Police warning to off-road bikers – Burstwick

HUMBERSIDE POLICE are warning anyone using off-road motorcycles or quad bikes on the disused railway line between Hull and Keyingham that they may face criminal proceedings.

Police have received complaints in relation to youths using motorcycles and quad bikes on the track, particularly in the Hariff Lane area of Burstwick, and have stepped up high visibility patrols in the area.

PC Will Stephenson from the Mid-Holderness Neighbourhood Policing Team is issuing a warning to anyone who frequents the track illegally. PC Stephenson said:

“The people that use the track for off-road biking not only cause a great deal of annoyance to residents, but they also present a significant danger to the public and cause damage to the countryside. Often, the vehicles used are not road legal, and in some cases not safe to be ridden – meaning the rider is putting themselves at risk of injury too. Police Officers and PCSOs are able to take positive action to tackle this type of anti-social behaviour by using effective powers such as the on-the-spot seizure of offending motorcycles. We are all prepared to take the necessary steps to protect the public, the countryside and the rights of way network in our area against this illegal activity. We are keen to work with the community to solve this issue, so please report any incidents or concerns to your local officers so that appropriate action can be taken.”

Over the last few months officers from the Neighbourhood Team have recovered a number of stolen motorcycles from stop checks done in the area. They have also issued warnings following the anti-social use of motorcycles and issued letters to the perpetrators.

Anyone who may be able to help police with their enquiries is asked to call Humberside Police tel 0845 60 60 222.

No applications for Royal Wedding street parties in Holderness

TWENTY TWO STREET PARTIES to celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton have been planned in East Yorkshire according to the East Riding Council.

The deadline for those wishing to organise a street party for the Friday 29th April, passed last Friday, and the Council has confirmed that it has received only 22 applications and none of these are from Holderness.

It is possible that some parties will be taking place that do not require road and street closures (inside community centres and other venues, private roads and car-parks, etc), however 22 does seem to be a surprisingly small number.

In Hull the number of street parties taking place is even lower with only 10 currently being formally organised (the deadline for applications in Hull is April 11th, so still time for this figure to improve).

Locally, then the only Royal Wedding celebration taking place in Hedon is the Gala being organised at The Station Pub. Jackie at the pub has reminded people that there are only 5-weeks to go before the celebration and is encouraging people to give their ideas on making the Gala a truly memorable celebration.

Internet Pet Store hits the high street

A PRESTON BASED BUSINESSMAN is taking his family-run online retail website onto the high street by opening up a shop in Hull.

Neil Shillito has been running Amazing Animal Accessories as an online business for five years. But now the online retailing business will open its first store on Holderness Road, Hull.

The new shop will carry a range of pet accessories in store which will complement their larger range of over 14,000 products available online.

Neil said: “We have reversed the current trend of shops and pubs setting up websites and facebook groups, by taking our online store to the high street. After five years trading solely on the internet the family management team have decided to open our first store. There will be a free delivery service within a 3 mile radius of the store and also to the villages and towns to the east of Hull i.e. Hedon, Preston, Paull, Burstwick.”

The business will offer a free call back service for regular orders and will call you once a month to save you having to worry about running out of your pets favourite foods and treats, and then deliver it free to your door at a time to suit you. There will be a “Pet of the Month” competition with the winner getting a £10 voucher to spend in store or online.

They will have full internet facilities in store available for customers to research their pets needs and requirements.

They will be opening within the next three weeks and look forward to meeting customers face to face at 347 Holderness road, Hull, HU8 8RD. The shop will be open Monday to Saturday, 9am – 5pm and of course 24 hours on the internet at www.amazinganimal.co.uk

Hedon Tweetup

A MEETING OF THE #HULLMEETUP is taking place in Hedon on Saturday 19th  March at The Station, 1pm.

The #Hullmeetup or “Tweetup” is a group of people from Hull and area who use Twitter - the real-time information network – to communicate, collect and share information. The group meets almost every month for a social gathering.

The group has been meeting in Hull mostly but did venture out to Beverley last year. But this time the group is coming to Hedon to visit our local pubs starting with The Station.

If you use Twitter and live in the town then we hope to see you en-route. Keep up to date with plans by logging onto your Twitter account and search for #Hullmeetup.

These events are very enjoyable and bring together a real variety of friendly people who share a passion for using Twitter.

Grumpy old man on “Overcrowded buses!”

ARE YOU A REGULAR TRAVELLER on the buses through to Hull in the morning? Have you sat on buses that are blatantly overcrowded, with standing room only? Have you experienced the routine of trying to read your newspaper, or catch up on lost sleep with 40 winks before you go to work, while dozens of mobile phones and mp3 players conspire to disturb your peace and keep you awake!

Are you one of the lucky ones sat in a seat – hopefully not next to the school student playing Lady Gaga at mega-decibels - or are you one of those who have to stand up all the way to town whilst looking sorrowfully at said student and wishing he’d offer his seat to an oldie like me!

Am I just “getting on a bit” and becoming the grumpy old man I swore I’d never become – or are the early morning buses really, really too overcrowded!?

Hedon Town Council just might find out for us! They recently resolved to send a letter to East Yorkshire Motor Services informing them of the perceived “overcrowding” of the No. 77 morning bus – particularly with students attending a school in Hull.

Ah Ha! Perhaps I’m not a grumpy old blogger after all. Perhaps there is a problem with the early morning buses! Unfortunately, one of the easiest answers is for buses to not pick up additional passengers and become overcrowded… which is fine, unless of course you’re the grump who doesn’t get picked up! On one unfortunate occasion three – three! – buses sailed by, leaving me and fellow stranded passengers fuming! The buses refused to stop because they were overcrowded with lucky folk picked up in Withernsea and the rest of Holderness!

Whilst having a moan on the subject of buses – can we please, please! get an additional bus service back to Hedon from Hull at 10.15pm? There is a bus at 9.15pm – and then the next is the last at 11pm – yes, I’ve missed the 9.15pm on too many occasions to mention – it’s no wonder I’m a grumpy old man!

Remembering Priestman – at work, at play

HEDON MUSEUM HAS OPENED for the new season with an exhibition looking at Hull company Priestman.

William Dent Priestman founded his first engineering firm in Hull in 1870, but it was only when he was asked to build a ‘winch and grab’ in an attempt to locate lost gold in a Spanish harbour, that he hit upon the idea of manufacturing the grabs to dredge docks and rivers.

Used first at Hull docks, the Priestman grabs were soon in demand all over the world and the business expanded into producing dredgers, cranes and excavators.

The Priestman manufacturing plant moved to Marfleet, Hull in 1958 and in its heyday employed over 1,500 workers on that site. The business expanded rapidly becoming an household name. However, the firm became a victim of the recession in the 1980′s and the Hull factory closed in 1984.

Bill Bromwich, who worked at for the company for 30 years, eventually as its publicity manager, salvaged thousands of brochures, photographs and memorabilia when the Hull plant went under. He has organised an exhibition which opened at Hedon Museum yesterday and tells the story of Priestman – at Work, at Play.

Hedon Museum is open Saturday and Wednesday from 10am – 4pm and the current exhibition runs until Wednesday, 16th March 2011.
