Hollywood Hedon?

HEDON IS A UNIQUE TOWN that perhaps deserves a wider audience – literally!
Hedon has a peculiar urban/rural mix; it has a long history reflected in its 800 year old iconic buildings. These contrast starkly with the sprawling massive industrial complex on the town’s doorstep with equally ‘iconic’ chimneys and towers. It has magnificent buildings that portray the town’s historic and current wealth, yet it also has all the visible problems (in small measure) that are associated with rural poverty.

In short – Hedon and the surrounding villages could be the ideal location and backdrop for TV and films production!

Police ‘Bike Wise’ to take place in Hedon

A NEW POLICE INITIATIVE aimed at keeping cyclists safe is being launched in Hedon.

Cyclists caught flouting the law by riding without lights, on the pavements, or ignoring road signs and traffic lights will be offered a place on a Bike Wise seminar as an alternative to a fixed penalty notice or summons to court.

Sergeant Phil Hinch from the Holderness Neighbourhood Policing Team said:

“Whilst cycling without lights and failing to observe traffic signals may seem relatively harmless, the consequences of any road user engaging in such behaviour can be dire. Cyclists, in particular can be vulnerable road users, and by overlooking simple safety measures take the chance of increasing their risk of injury.”

Police officers will be looking at the behaviour of cyclists and will offer the Bike Wise seminars to those presenting a risk to road safety and breaking the law. This would be offered as an alternative to court proceedings or £30 fixed penalty notices.

The Bike Wise sessions will be given by local neighbourhood police officers and present appropriate cycle safety information to those selected to attend. The seminars will pro-actively promote road safety and crime prevention and encourage people to be seen and use lights at night.

The Seminars will take place in the Scouts Hut, Sheriffs Highway, Hedon and are in conjunction with Hedon Youth Initiative who have kindly donated a number of sets of lights to launch the project which will be given to each attendee.

Hedon Travel Surgery

HAVE YOUR SAY about public transport at a special Travel Surgery to be held in Hedon on Tuesday 6th March 2012.

Bus and rail passengers will have the chance to comment about local services at this special event. It will take place onboard a consultation bus that will be parked up at Hedon Market Place from 10am – 3pm.

The Hedon Travel Surgery is organised by specialist transport charity The City of Hull & Humber Environment Forum (CHEF). It will give the public an opportunity to raise issues and make suggestions about anything to do with public and community transport issues; routes, timetables, reliability, service quality, fares, suggestions for new routes and ideas for days out.

It will also give important feedback to the council and transport operators to help improve the quality of the transport network.

Information will be available from East Yorkshire Motor Service (EYMS), Northern Rail, First Hull Trains and First Transpennine Express as well as Hart – the local community transport operator. You can also find out about concessionary bus passes or make representations about bus stops.

Free, all welcome. No appointment necessary. You don’t have to be a bus or train user; you might just want to find out what services are available.

Hedon wartime bombing – can you help with information?

IN JUNE last year James Bagnall asked for further information about the site of a World War II bombing raid on Hedon in May 1941 in which it was thought an entire family was wiped out.

Two properties, Ashley Villas and Daisy Villas on Magdalen Lane, Hedon, were destroyed  in the bombing raid on 8th May 1941 and 11 people were killed – including six members of the Spicer family Mr Ernest Spicer, his wife Vida and four children, John (aged 22), Delma (14), Geoffrey (10) and Edward (6).

This horrific tragedy has taken another macabre turn with the discovery that another member of the Spicer family, son Jack (22), also died during the war two years later on February 6th 1943.

And another mystery has arisen during the Hedon Blog discussion on these tragic events. The photos on this page were taken and sent in by Mr Peter Batty in Scunthorpe: The entire Spicer family are commemorated/buried in the Crosby Cemetery in Scunthorpe?

It is believed that the bombing raid left eleven casualties, the Spicer family of Ashley Villas, and Lucy Lear also of Ashley Villas, and Ellen and Josephine Ellerton and John and Muriel French of Daisy Villas.

We are appealing to readers who might have any further information about the families involved to get in touch. Did the victims all live in Hedon? What is the Spicer family’s link with Scunthorpe? What fate befell Jack Spicer?

And also James Bagnall’s original questions: What type of houses were Daisy Villas and Ashley Villas. What happened around the bombing, clearance and rebuild? Are there any photos of the area before or after the bombing?

Attempted Burglary – Co-op petrol station

HUMBERSIDE POLICE are investigating an attempted burglary that happened at the Co-op filling station in Hull Road, Hedon between 3:10am and 3:26am on Sunday 19th February 2012.

Two suspects entered the forecourt of the closed filling station on either a low powered motorcycle or moped. Neither suspect was wearing a crash helmet. They approached the front security shutters of the premises and forced both security shutters causing extensive damage to both. They then attempted to force the secure glass electric door which caused the door to open slightly.

The alarm was activated and both suspects made off in an unknown direction on the motorcycle without having gained entry to the station.

The damage to the filling station is expected to cost more than £3,000 to repair.

Police are appealing for anyone with information or witnesses to contact the police on the non-emergency telephone number 101 referring to log number 114 of 19th February, or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
