UPDATE – Planning for Hot Food Take Away, Hedon Market Place

Noise and smells?

THE PLANNING APPLICATION to open a new hot food take-away in Hedon Market Place, presumed to be a Chinese, has run into some serious objections.

As well as significant opposition from Hedon Town Council who object on the grounds of:

  • inadequate parking and servicing
  • noises and disturbances
  • disturbances from smells
  • affects on the Hedon conservation area
  • traffic generation

The East Riding Council’s own Environmental Health Officer (EHO), Jonathan Smith, has also recommended refusal of the planning application. The EHO is concerned that odours and noise from the kitchen, which would be channelled through to the rear of the building via an external flue, would affect nearby residential properties.

“On the basis of the potential to create odour and noise I feel that there is sufficient concern that this proposal would lead to a loss of residential amenity for occupiers of nearby residential property and therefore I would wish to recommend refusal of the application.”

Whilst this in itself does not mean that Council planners will refuse the application – it could still be accepted with an agreement to improve the flue extraction system being proposed – it does seem a big obstacle to the current proposal.

The latest expiry date for “neighbour consultation” is Wednesday 2nd February. Enter the East Riding’s Public Access website and enter Planning Application number 10/05104/PLF to see more details.

Hot food take-away proposal sparks controversy

Existing take-away

“DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER TAKE-AWAY IN HEDON?” This is the question asked by commentators on the Hedon Blog (and Facebook Page) following publication of the planning application from Chi Chow to get permission to change the use of a former florists in the Market Place to a hot food take-away.

  • “We have 2 Pizza/Burger takeaways, a Fish and Chip Shop, an Indian takeaway and a Chinese takeaway. I think we are well catered for in the hot food department!” argues Sarah.
  • Gary says “We should support the takeaways we already have especially in the current climate when business’s already struggle to stay open.”
  • Mike comments: “I think this would be a big mistake if it gets passed, the shop will be closed all day only opening at 5:00, a prime retail location will be shut all day how sad considering we already have umpteen food outlets in Hedon”
  • “What concerns me is that dark corner, where the shop is situated, and what people a late night takeaway attracts …how many times do we see the windows of the current chinese put through?!!! I wonder how many drunken fights will occure?” fears Carol
  • “Unfortunately Hedon is selling out and killing any ‘unique’ quality it had/has….soon there will nothing left of its past” states Sydell.

The application to obtain planning permission is currently open for public comments. Anyone can object, support or comment on a planning application. Those who are aware of specific local conditions and problems can highlight these before the application is considered.

It is important to note that the council can only take into account matters which are relevant to the planning process. Advice on this is available from Planning Aid (see Planning Pack section 9).

New Hot Food take-away in Hedon Market Place?

HEDON MARKET PLACE could be the location for a new hot food take-away subject to the proposal obtaining planning permission…

A planning application has been submitted to the East Riding Council to change the premises currently the New Dawn Florist from a shop unit to a hot food take-away.

The new take-away at 16, Market Place would sit between delicatessen Taste and printers Greenprint. The Council have already previously approved a planning application for a potential change-of-use from retail shop unit to a restaurant at the nearby premises currently previously occupied by Greenprint (see comment below).

The applicants argue that a take away facility within Hedon will mean people will not have to travel considerable distances to other towns and villages to other take away shops.

The planning application is due to be discussed by the Hedon Town Councillors on Thursday 13th January.

Further information about the Planning Application can be found at the East Riding Council Planning Public Access website. You need to agree to the terms and conditions of the website by ticking the box and then search for Planning Application 10/05104/PLF in the search box as indicated below:

Christmas Lights Switch On

THE SWITCH ON of Hedon’s Christmas Lights tomorrow (Fri 26th Nov 2010) is always a popular event with its stalls, rides, hot-chesnuts, carol singing and other attractions.
However this year, the seasonal weather – with the possibility of snow – should add a really festive atmosphere to the occasion. The secret is to bring lots of warm clothing, scarves, hats and gloves, but also take advantage of the many indoor attractions available as well as those outdoor. You can visit Alexandra Hall where warm and other refreshments will be available; you can also visit the warm interiors of the local pubs and the shops that will be open.

An interesting attraction on the evening will be at the Game People Shop in George Street. Mike Pearce says the shop will be opening late and holding a demonstration of the Kinect for the Xbox 360. He invites people to come and have a look at this amazing brand-new gaming technology!

Those travelling by car should note that parking is available at the Iveson Close Car Park, Johnsons Corner Car Park, Market Hill and surrounding on-street parking.

Hedon – Preserving our uniqueness!

HEDON TOWN COUNCIL has appealed to local businesses to help in improving the appearance and special character of the town, and enhance civic pride – particularly in the town centre.

As well as catering for local residents shopping needs, the town’s central thoroughfare, of St Augustine’s Gate, Market Place and Souttergate, is also a visitor attraction. Visitors find Hedon a charming place to visit: They come, and are pleased with the town’s unique charms; they also buy from the local shops; eat and drink locally, use and pay for local facilities.

And therein lies the issue: – Local businesses want to attract residents and visitors into their premises. By doing so they advertise their premises in ways that ‘stand out’ from the crowd. Over a period of time a series of bright, modern advertising logos and signs dominate a town centre – and it begins to look like any other town centre in the country! The ‘local’ charm and uniqueness is lost!
