The 2011 Paull Scarecrow Festival

Damn Moles! Scarecrow

Photo taken by Jim Uney of the winning scarecrow 2010

ONLY THE BRAVEST CROWS will be flying around Paull on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August as the Annual Paull Scarecrow Festival takes place.

Paull and its vibrant village community have all helped make the Paull Scarecrow Festival a major local attraction. You can pick up a map (small cost) on the day from the Village Hall which shows the number and location of each scarecrow. You can use the map to vote for your favourite.

The Scarecrow Festival is not only a fun way to involve the local community –  it also brings many visitors to the village and provides some fantastic photo opportunities!

If you do take any photos of the scarecrows and want to share them here on the Hedon Blog then we can add them to our online gallery (see 2010). Also we’d like to print off some of the best and present a collage of them to the Paull Village Hall as a record of the 2011 Festival – and as a way of saying ‘Thank You” to the village for organising such an entertaining event!

You can find everything you need to know about the Festival at the Paull Village Hall website at the Scarecrow Festival 2011.

Be prepared – Digital TV Switchover tomorrow!

THE DIGITAL TV SWITCHOVER - STAGE 2 is taking place in this part of East Yorkshire tomorrow WEDNESDAY 17th AUGUST 2011.

The existing analogue TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal. If you have Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV you’ll need to re-tune your equipment again.

If you do not re-tune your television set after 6:00am tomorrow morning and switch to DIGITAL – you will lose your TV service!

There is information available on switching at DigitalUK however many people who are unsure about the switchover or technology have preferred to ask people they know.

So don’t let people miss out – check that your friends, neighbours and relatives are switched on to digital!

Digital Switchover – Wed 3rd August and Wed 17th August

THE DIGITAL TV SWITCHOVER is taking place. The existing TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal.

Research done by DigitalUK does indicate that nine-out-of-10 homes in the area have gone digital but thousands of viewers still need to get ready or risk having a blank screen!

Released by The National Archives – UFOs, Alien Abduction and East Yorkshire

Website image collected by Ministry of Defence (MoD)

UFO X-FILES RELEASED by The National Archives contain at least three ‘incidents’ relating to unidentified flying objects over East Yorkshire.

One took place over Withernsea on June 15th 2002. During the resort’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, a restored Lancaster Bomber was conducting a fly-over as part of a Battle of Britain display which was recorded by a local photographer. After downloading the digital images he noticed one image (image here from the released MoD files) contained a UFO which he described as looking “decidedly triangular in shape”.

In response to queries at the time the MoD responded: “We are satisfied that there is no corroborating evidence to suggest that the United Kingdom’s airspace was breached by unauthorised military aircraft on the 15th June.”

Another report from two police officers – also in 2002, on October 17th – described an object “the size of a bright star but of different colours – blue, green, red and white” that appeared over BP Chemicals, Hedon and Thorngumbald. The officers report stated: “The object appeared to move fast and then stop – it stopped and started on a couple of occasions and repeatedly changed its colour/shape, fading and also becoming brighter at times.” The ‘report as a matter of policy’ was sent to the MoD for their information.

The released files also include detailed papers and e-mails relating to the disappearance of Captain William Schaffner who disappeared after his Lightning jet aircraft crashed in the ocean over the East Yorkshire Coast in September 1970. The wreckage of the aircraft was found three months later, with the canopy and escape-ejection mechanism still intact. But the pilot’s body was never found. UFOlogists have claimed that Captain Schaffner was abducted by Aliens.

The released files, which contain official reports, forms and e-mails, are available from the special National Archives website at: The UFO files – from The National Archives
