Streets of Hedon – A guide to their names

Streets of Hedon001

THE HEDON BLOG is absolutely delighted with its new early Christmas present!

Streets of Hedon–A guide to their names was published in 1989 by John Markham and contains a history behind the town’s street names.

Unfortunately the book is no longer available to purchase – ours was found for us in the local Dove House Hospice shop – it is a real shame that you can no longer buy the book, because as the book itself says “It will revive memories for long established residents and provide a pleasant introduction to the history of the town for those who have come to live here.”

Expect an occasional reference to this book on future articles on the Hedon Blog.

Dove House Charity Day – King’s Head

THE KING’S HEAD, Souttergate, Hedon is hosting a charity day for the Dove House Hospice on Spring Bank Holiday Monday, 2nd May from 2pm – midnight.

A disco, karaoke, barbecue and raffle will be on offer at the pub.

Volunteering that makes a difference – Dove House

THE DOVE HOUSE CHARITY SHOP in Hedon is seeking volunteers to help out on specific days.

Dove House Hospice on Chamberlain Road, Hull provides quality care for people whose illness is no longer curable. Care is provided for patients suffering from cancer, respiratory diseases and other incurable illnesses.

There is no charge for any of the services at Dove House and the £5m running costs each year are met through fundraising activities. One of the major ways that the organisation raises this money is through its network of 30 shops in the region.

If you wish to apply to become a volunteer at the Hedon Charity Shop then contact Dove House, Hedon Shop or e-mail volunteers@dovehouse.org.uk.

Hedon’s unofficial ‘library’

QUESTION: WHAT HAVE the following books got in common?

ANSWER: They have all been bought from the Dove House Charity Shop in Hedon – most of them costing far less than £2.50! The links to the books above are given to demonstrate what they would really cost if bought from a commercial seller.

The books listed above are only a small selection of the wide variety purchased from the shop – to read, or as gifts – during the last 12 months. To an avid reader, the Dove House Shop can become as popular as the local library.

Of course it is also good to know that your purchases are helping to sustain a popular charity and good cause in the Dove House Hospice – and once you have read a book you can pass it on to someone else to enjoy, or indeed donate it back to the shop!

If you haven’t visited the Dove House Shop for a while – then give it a whirl – you will be surprised by the quality of goods (not just books of course) on offer.

UK’s Youngest Michael Jackson lookalike performs in Hedon

MICHAEL JACKSON lookalike Perry Pullman will thrill audiences at the Alexandra Hall in October.

Perry, who has recently performed at Hull Truck Theatre and TribFest 2010, first started impersonating the King of Pop when he was four years old and did his first “gig” aged 8. Now at age only 16 he is one of the youngest people touring a tribute act to Michael Jackson.

Although he doesn’t sing live but performs to backing music, the young artist has gained a reputation for mastering the moves made famous by Michael Jackson.

The MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE takes place at Alexandra Hall, Hedon, on Saturday 30th October. Doors open at 7:30pm for an 8:00 start.

All proceeds from the performance will go towards the DOVE HOUSE hospice appeal. Tickets at £7.50 each are available from the Dove House shop in Souttergate, Hedon.

Love You 2 Coffee Morning

A LOVE YOU 2 Coffee Morning is being held in Preston on Sunday 22nd August 2010 from 10.ooam until 2.00pm.

The event which involves a raffle, golfing game, train rides, cake stall and tombola takes place at Kirklands, 4 Kirk Road, Preston. Entry is by donation. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to bring their friends!

All proceeds from the event will go to the Dove House Hospice Love You 2 appeal.

To support the completion of major re-development works at its Chamberlain Road, Hull base, Dove House needs to raise an extra £2.5m in the next two and half years, in addition to funding already being generated for day to day running costs – this is equivalent to raising an additional £2.00 per minute.
