Anti-Smells Day of Action – Campaign Humour

TODAY’S DAY OF ACTION against foul odours will have its touches of humour. Specifically with the appearance of PONGO, the anti-smells campaigning skunk, at Paull Sportsfield at 9am and in Hedon Marketplace at 12 noon. But this is not the only use of humour during this otherwise serious campaign.

Jim Lindop called for permits to be issued, limiting the number of times that Hull people can flush their loos – each flush sends more waste materials into the sewers heading towards the East Riding and the Saltend Treatment Works. If the number of Hull flushes permitted was exceeded, then they should see their waste returned to them by the same sewer system!

Jim Uney in his comments made the perfect case for Yorkshire Water to move their Headquarters from Bradford to Saltend – which would really demonstrate the water company’s confidence that the new odour control unit will work as they promise!

But one of the funniest contributions to ‘smell-gate’  is the letter written to the Hull Daily Mail by R&J Scott in response to the suggestion that the pea-harvest was to blame for the odours.

The Scotts talk about Yorkshire Water thumbing through The Good Excuse Book of Unexplained Pongs. Excuse 533 states that new odour will be down to the rhubarb harvest! And Excuse 534 will be the Mushroom harvest:

“The residents of this area are much like the mushroom crop – kept in the dark and regularly fed large amounts of ‘manure’…”

Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand! – Mark Twain

Name the campaigning smelly skunk!

RESIDENTS IN PAULL are making a skunk costume to act as a mascot in theYorkshire Water Smells campaign. Can you help them come up with a name for our Yorkshire Water smelly skunk?

You have one vote!

The Poll will close on Monday 15th August 2011.

Hedon Tweetup

A MEETING OF THE #HULLMEETUP is taking place in Hedon on Saturday 19th  March at The Station, 1pm.

The #Hullmeetup or “Tweetup” is a group of people from Hull and area who use Twitter - the real-time information network – to communicate, collect and share information. The group meets almost every month for a social gathering.

The group has been meeting in Hull mostly but did venture out to Beverley last year. But this time the group is coming to Hedon to visit our local pubs starting with The Station.

If you use Twitter and live in the town then we hope to see you en-route. Keep up to date with plans by logging onto your Twitter account and search for #Hullmeetup.

These events are very enjoyable and bring together a real variety of friendly people who share a passion for using Twitter.

What is wrong here?

THIS PICTURE shows one of the new “life-time-homes” built by East Riding Council in Cloeberry Way, Hedon. But what is wrong here??

Have a Twitter about Hedon for Christmas… and let’s Tweet-up in the New Year!

GET YOURSELF TWITTER FOR CHRISTMAS…

TWITTER IS A REAL-TIME information network that connects you to the latest information about what you find interesting. Simply find the public streams you find most compelling and follow the conversations.

At the heart of Twitter are small text-like messages of information called Tweets. Each Tweet is 140 characters in length, but you can share a lot with a little space and link to other websites and sources of further information.

Some people never tweet, they simply use Twitter as a way to get the latest information on the things that interest them. Whilst Facebook is all about connecting and chatting, Twitter is more about collecting and sharing information. …Of course some people use it to follow their favourite pop-stars and celebrities. Hmph!

Connected to each 140-character Tweet is a details section that provides additional information. You can tell your story within your Tweet, or you can think of a Tweet as the headline, and use the details pane to tell the rest with photos, videos and other media content. See Twitter in action on YouTube.

For those of you who are serious about searching and organising with Twitter, then you can download third-party applications like TweetDeck to help you do just that!

AND LET’S MEET-UP…

In the New Year… Let’s have a local meet-up of all those connected to the Hedon Blog via its  Twitter Account @HedonBlog (and Facebook Page) – a Tweet-up (and a Face-up)!

This can be a social event, but also a chance to bring your own Hedon news and views for inclusion in the town’s own 21st century news channel! And a chance to meet others who want to help out with the Blog reporting and information service.

Watch this space…

PS: Thank you to Glenn Stallard who sent in this cool Hedon Blog logo! Only just retrieved it after it got caught up in the Blog e-mail system.
