Mapping Hedon’s Local History

AS PART OF OUR INVOLVEMENT in the HypARlocal project the Hedon Blog has started to map some of the articles done about the town’s local history.

Eventually, the aim will be to provide a service for those with Smartphones and other mobile devices, where you will be able to scan a particular street with your device’s camera, and an App will bring up local stories and articles associated with that particular place/street/building.

We have started mapping some of the stories and articles that have previously been written by the Blog. The resulting map on Google should be available by clicking the link below – although the results do not always look the same on different browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc).

We do want to get the historical information right – and the locations in the right places. If you can help with this, then Ray Duffill at the Hedon Blog would be pleased to hear from you! E-mail him at hedonblog@gmx.com or leave a comment.

Click the link below to take you to the Google Map – and then click on one of the Blue place-markers to see the article associated with that location.

This is all very experimental – but very exciting!

Spring Online at Hedon Library

YOU CAN USE THE COMPUTERS to get online at Hedon Library next week – and you are particularly encouraged to have a go if you have never gone on the internet before!

It’s all part of Spring Online which is all about demonstrating what the internet can do for you!

The organisers behind Spring Online are suggesting that people have a look at four websites – and then perhaps you could show them to others you know who are not already on the internet!?

It’s free to use the six computers! It’s free to use the internet and get e-mail access!

Now obviously the people who might benefit from this will not be looking at this article – so please do print it off and share it with those people!

For further information about how computers and the internet can improve your life, or to check availability and make a booking, contact:

Spurn and St Augustine’s by Local iPad Artist

THESE STUNNING IMAGES have been painted by local artist Grahame Tranmer – on his iPad!

Grahame tells us: “Although I have painted and drawn a lot in the past with various mediums its always been a bit of a chore getting all the gear out and clearing up. That’s why this iPad painting is perfect for me.

I was inspired to have a go after watching David Hockney interviewed on the box. There are a few apps available and after reading the reviews I plumbed for Inspire pro. I find it very easy to get to know and use. It offers four brushes and pallet knife all of which can be changed in size. It has a dry bush to mix and drag – it’s just like painting for real but without the mess.

After bit of practice I tried a few local scenes, places I love – and hope to do a lot more. Hope you like them.”

The iPad is well-known for its ability to showcase films and music – but this is the first time we have seen the tablet computer used to create such wonderful local Holderness artwork.

If pen and ink artist FS Smith was still alive today (read about the exhibition at Hedon Museum) – we think he would have been using his tablet computer to re-create the world around him!

Click on the images above to go to Graham’s Flickr Page and see more of his iPad art.

Have you had a go at digitally drawing local scenes? Do you feel inspired by Grahame to give it a go? Then send your art work into us to showcase on the Blog!

Pinterest Poster Posterity!

YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED a new symbol appearing on the Sharing buttons at the bottom of each article on the Hedon Blog: Follow Me on Pinterest Pinterest.

Pinterest is a virtual pin board. It allows people to collect images from across the internet that interest and inspire them. When you see the  Follow Me on Pinterest symbol on a website then you can click it to share an image to your Pinterest account.

“Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.” Pinterest website

HU12 Online has set up a Pinterest account to collect POSTERS that have been used in the area.

Quite often, lot of effort goes into designing posters – then after the event they are designed to promote, they are taken down – or worse still allowed to fade and discolour on a noticeboard somewhere! But not any more! We will be collecting local posters and saving them for posterity!

We have just started the collection which consists of old and current posters. Posters? Nay! – Works of art!

Our Town Centre Online?

RETAIL EXPERT Mary Portas recently produced a report – well publicised in the media – about the future of our High Streets and Town Centres. The Portas Review comments about the change in the retail landscape – particularly the development of online shopping – that has led to many town centres struggling to survive. It talks about re-invigorating and re-imagining our high street:

Portas states her aim is: “… to put the heart back into the centre of our High Streets, re-imagined as destinations for socialising, culture, health, wellbeing, creativity and learning. Places that will develop and sustain new and existing markets and businesses. The new High Streets won’t just be about selling goods. The mix will include shops but could also include housing, offices, sport, schools or other social, commercial and cultural enterprises and meeting places. They should become places where we go to engage with other people in our communities, where shopping is just one small part of a rich mix of activities.”

The Portas Report has many recommendations and ideas for “re-imagining” our town centres. Some of which have been commented upon by the Hedon Blog’s colleagues at Talk About Local – Six ways hyperlocal could help your High Street. One of these ideas is about creating an Online Town Centre.

An Online Town Centre would be a place where local people and visitors can go to find out about the latest offers, initiatives and news about the town centre. There might be a graphical representation of each of the shops and businesses, with links to websites and an opportunity to really develop and highlight the Buy Local message i.e. a pound spent locally has much more local impact than a pound spent elsewhere.

An Online Town Centre could help generate renewed interest and even enthusiasm about the place. It could help foster new relationships between local people and their local traders and entrepreneurs. Buy Local could turn into Love Local? It could prompt the formation of a ‘town team’ or forum dedicated to re-invigorating a town centre. It could also become the eMarketPlace for the town?

So how about it? Hedon Town Centre Online – can we – should we make it happen?

Hedon Blog joins international protest today

THE US SENATE is to have a vote on its PROTECT IP / STOP ONLINE PIRACY ACT on Tuesday 24th January.

Campaigners fear that this legislation will stifle free speech and innovation, and even threaten popular web services like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook.

In response the largest ever web protest in history is being organised today 18th January 2012.

The Act intends to deal with the online piracy that threatens the US entertainment industry i.e. the illegal download of films and music. However, the means to do this could involve entire US-based websites being shut down because some of their users have links to or use pirated material.

Why should this concern us in Hedon? A few infringing links could result in a website full of otherwise legal material being closed down. Website owners would become liable for the content that their users post. YouTube, Twitter, Facebook – and web hosting firms like WordPress (which hosts the Hedon Blog) – would have to actively censor their users!

The Hedon Blog does not support web piracy, however, in response to the threat to the free internet posed by this US action – the Hedon Blog will be wearing its Stop Censorship ribbon from now until the 24th January 2012 – the day the vote takes place.

This Video explains what the protest is all about:
