10% Discount for Hedon people at popular Hull Butchers and Bakers

MOORFIELDS
is a popular Butchers and Bakers Shop in Ings Road, Hull. The business is owned by local Hedon man Kevin Moore.

Kevin, his Master Baker John Allenby and the shop’s other staff, are all proud of the business. “We aim to be artisans of the meat and bakery trade” says Kevin “We use only traditional methods in our bakery at the back of the shop.”

Kevin - The 'Bread moulding machine'

The Hedon Blogger visited the shop on a busy Tuesday morning and saw those traditional methods in operation. Each pie being made that particular morning was individually shaped, filled and styled – definitely no factory mass-produced goods here!

Kevin is actually very modest about the business and the quality of the goods. It was left to one of the serving staff who whispered to me: “Our blackcurrant creams are fantastic! Customers tell us you can’t get the like anywhere else!”

Kevin is also proud to live in Hedon; it’s the town he’s lived in for 20 years. So it is with delight that the Hedon Blog can announce that Moorfields have arranged for a special 10% discount for any Hedon Blog reader that wants to take advantage of the Ings Road Shop products.

To take advantage of the offer then visit the Offers page on the Moorfields Website and put  stationpubhedon in the password  box (now there’s a clue to Kevin’s favourite pub!) – and then print out the Voucher. The Voucher can be used at the shop to claim your 10% discount.

This is a great offer for local people and a chance to save some money on quality produce – and do mention the Hedon Blog when visiting the shop!

Wind Turbine Manufacturing – Devil in the detail

THE NEWS that Alexandra Dock is to be developed as a base of operations, known as Green Port Hull, for wind turbine manufacturing will certainly have ramifications for the whole area.

Mostly we would expect positive benefits to arise from this development and the news of new jobs and investment will be warmly welcomed in the area.

However, it would be wise to see more details of what the proposals will mean in practice, particularly in terms of any increased local inconvenience that might be caused, before giving our unequivocal support. This is not to be negative about the development, but to be realistic.

As indicated by the Hedon Blog in November, the supply chain and cluster of industries needed to make Green Port Hull and the Humber Enterprise Zone successful could see land being developed right on our doorstep: See Proposal to develop Hedon Haven as employment land.

It is important that Hedon gleans the full benefits of this marvellous opportunity, but also takes steps to limit some of the inevitable downsides of this development.

Perhaps, it would be a good idea if local businesses, traders, community groups, our political representatives and other interested people met – perhaps at a public meeting – to consider developments, and take any necessary actions to ‘accentuate the positive, and eliminate the negative’ aspects of any proposals. It would also give local people an opportunity to get involved early and help shape any local proposals.

A more cautious welcome to the news perhaps, but as ever, the devil is in the detail!

Bus fares set to increase

FROM SATURDAY 19th November 2011 the cost of a single bus ticket from Hedon to Hull will rise from £2 to £2.10. There will be a corresponding 5% rise in return and weekly tickets.

‘Is Hedon Town Council letting its residents down’ asks Ward Councillor

WARD COUNCILLOR John Dennis has hit out at a decision made by a Hedon Town Council committee to play no part in the consultation process on proposed boundary changes.

The Boundary Commission for England has proposed that Hedon and the wider South West Holderness Ward is included in the Kingston Upon Hull East constituency for Parliamentary elections from 2015 (when the next General Election will be held).

Councillor Dennis, who is also a Hedon Town Councillor, had tabled an item for discussion on the boundary changes at the Town Council’s Finance & General Purposes Committee last month. He takes up the story in his own comments:

“I had asked for the matter to be discussed in committee on 22nd. September at the Hedon Town Council and I e-mailed members with my thoughts before the meeting as I was unable to attend that evening due to being away on holiday.
Upon my return I am told, to my absolute amazement, that Hedon Town Council has made a decision NOT to become involved in the consultation process! I think it my duty to make the residents of the town and the surrounding villages aware of this.”

The matter is considered ‘too political’ for the Hedon Town Council to become involved in. But Councillor Dennis disagrees:

“This, to me, is not a party political matter, it is wholly a COMMUNITY issue; it’s about whether the residents of this Ward, which comprises entirely rural communities, would be disadvantaged by being lumped together with the entirely urban wards within the city of Hull…”

The Councillor has urged people to get involved in the consultation generally, but also to contact the Town Council with their views on the issue:

“I urge residents to make representations to the Town Hall without delay. A response to this Blog item, a letter to the Town Clerk or an email through me will suffice. The Town Council cannot re-visit their decision for 6 months unless new information comes to light. Perhaps demands from a significant number of the people who voted for them will count as ‘new information’. The consultation process ends in early December, so please act now and ask your family and friends to do so too.”

Councillor John Dennis has submitted his views in response to an article published yesterday. His comments can be viewed in full at HU12, visit: Boundary Changes – “Is Hedon Town Council letting its residents down?

Major Emergency Advice from Saltend Chemicals Park (Republished)

FOLLOWING THE RELEASE OF NON-TOXIC VAPOUR from the INEOS plant at Saltend on Monday (26th Sept 2011) and concerns about the non-sounding of the toxic alarm, the Hedon Blog is republishing an article from May 2010 about the Major Emergency Advice booklet distributed that month.

Also on HU12 we ask the question: What would happen if a toxic gas alarm sounded now…?

Campaign: Lobby East Riding Council over Yorkshire Water Smells

WEDNESDAY 21st SEPTEMBER 2011 is the next date for the diaries of those campaigning against the Saltend pongs!

At 10am the East Riding Council’s Environment and Regeneration Overview and Scrutiny Sub-Committee meets and will be formally presented with the Petition (signed by 2,405 people) calling for Yorkshire Water to be dealt with as a ‘statutory nuisance’ for  its persistent odour problems that affect local communities.

Letter to OSC - sampleThe 12 councillors that form the Sub-Committee  - which includes our own ward Councillor John Dennis – have all been sent a letter that states:

“Yorkshire Water have invested £3.5m into a new Odour Control Unit which will become operational by December this year, but local residents are completely cynical that the new unit will eliminate the odour problems. Local people have lost trust in Yorkshire Water following, what is seen as, their broken promises to tackle odours made in the past.

Boundary Changes: MP strongly opposes move to bring Hedon into East Hull

GRAHAM STUART MP says he was shocked by the changes to Parliamentary constituency boundaries proposed by the Boundary Commission for England.

In a news statement issued today the Beverley and Holderness MP says he is particularly concerned about plans to include Hedon in a largely urban constituency around the city of Hull.

The MP said, “I know we all expected some changes to our constituencies, but what we got was far more radical, and, to my mind, unnecessary. I strongly oppose bringing South West Holderness into Kingston upon Hull East. It is not a natural fit and the Boundary Commission needs to rethink its recommendation.”

He concluded, “I am interested in finding out more about what my constituents think about the Boundary Review. Just from what I have heard today, I think people will have strong views on the matter.”
