Wednesday Writings – The Town Council (a poem)

The Town Council – By David Thompson

Twice monthly do the meetings fall,
Held in the towns` historic hall,
Where mayors of yesterday, look down
Upon the dealings of the town.

The twelve good men and women who
Give free their time, good deeds to do,
With minutes taken by the clerk
And all decisions for to mark.

All interests must be declared
And any prejudices heard,
For all the public has to see
That squeaky clean, they have to be.

They start the night with best intent,
“By ten the meetings will be spent”,
But if at length they ramble on,
It could be later when they`re done.

For all assembled have their say,
And some will say it come what may,
And some say yes, and some say no
When arguments flow to and fro.

Of kitchen costs, burial fees,
Extension plans, and pruning trees,
Deliberations quite mundane,
The rights of way on Twyers Lane.

They set the precept for the year,
For keeping dykes and ditches clear,
The peoples` taxes to disburse,
These keepers of the public purse.

The civic cogs go creaking on
and after all is said and done,
Its down the “Legion”, or the “Station”
For a little lubrication.

What better person to eulogise about the Town Council – than a town councillor! As well as an outstanding poet, Councillor David Thompson is also one of the “twelve good men and women” mentioned above!

Yorkshire Water announces £50,000 Community Fund

YORKSHIRE WATER have today announced that a £50,000 Community Fund will be put in place to compensate for the problem odours that have impacted on residents during the last few years from the Waste Water Treatment Works at Saltend.

Richard Sears, Community Engagement Manager for Yorkshire Water, said: “We know that for some years the local community put up with intermittent odours from the site and we recognise that this was clearly unacceptable. Since last summer, we’ve done a huge amount of work to reduce odours at the site, including installing a state-of-the-art odour control unit which we believe will significantly help to reduce any excessive odours from the site.

“We want to be a good neighbour and this trust fund underlines our commitment to working alongside the local community and doing what we can to give something back through this £50,000 cash fund.”

A local panel is being set up which will have the final say on projects and causes that will benefit from the Community Fund. It is understood that local councillors from South West Holderness and East Hull will make up the majority of the 10-strong panel who will be meeting on the 30th April to determine ground-rules for how the fund will be operated and criteria for bidding for a share of the cash.

Spurn and St Augustine’s by Local iPad Artist

THESE STUNNING IMAGES have been painted by local artist Grahame Tranmer – on his iPad!

Grahame tells us: “Although I have painted and drawn a lot in the past with various mediums its always been a bit of a chore getting all the gear out and clearing up. That’s why this iPad painting is perfect for me.

I was inspired to have a go after watching David Hockney interviewed on the box. There are a few apps available and after reading the reviews I plumbed for Inspire pro. I find it very easy to get to know and use. It offers four brushes and pallet knife all of which can be changed in size. It has a dry bush to mix and drag – it’s just like painting for real but without the mess.

After bit of practice I tried a few local scenes, places I love – and hope to do a lot more. Hope you like them.”

The iPad is well-known for its ability to showcase films and music – but this is the first time we have seen the tablet computer used to create such wonderful local Holderness artwork.

If pen and ink artist FS Smith was still alive today (read about the exhibition at Hedon Museum) – we think he would have been using his tablet computer to re-create the world around him!

Click on the images above to go to Graham’s Flickr Page and see more of his iPad art.

Have you had a go at digitally drawing local scenes? Do you feel inspired by Grahame to give it a go? Then send your art work into us to showcase on the Blog!

Wednesday Writings – Mood Changes

Mood Changes – By Jo Gardner

Head in turmoil
Every-thing is black
Need a release
Found a blade
Blood oozes
Sense of relief

———————————————

Out of the blue
The laughter of child
Mellows the mood
From black to gold
Despair and hope so closely linked
Nothing beats the laughter of child
