Popular and Best bits for 2010

TRADITIONALLY AT NEW YEAR we look back at what has been achieved in the old year.

The Hedon Blog probably ‘grew up’ during 2010 and – rather than just being a hobby blog – it became a website that local people began to use in greater numbers to find out information about their home town.

In its first month of operation (Feb 2009) the Hedon Blog had just over 200 page views – in its latest month (Dec 2010) the statistics reveal that over 8,300 visited the Blog. There were 22,375 page views in 2009, and 73,929 in 2010. It is expected to reach over 100,000 individual page views by our 2nd anniversary in February 2011. Continue reading

Graham Stuart Re-elected

Congratulations to Graham Stuart on his re-election as Member of Parliament for the Beverley and Holderness Constituency.

The results of the poll are as follows:

  • Graham StuartConservative - 25,063
  • Craig DobsonLiberal Democrats – 12,076
  • Ian SaundersLabour Party – 11,224
  • Neil WhitelamBritish National Party – 2,080
  • Andy HorsfieldUnited Kingdom Independence Party – 1,845
  • Bill RigbyGreen Party – 686
  • Ron HughesIndependent - 225

Majority 12,987 (24.4%)

Turnout 53,199 (66.8%)

Graham on his Twitter page expressed his pleasant surprise at the size of his majority, but has warned that:

Pitching the country into a ferocious battle over voting systems would be irresponsible madness when we are in such a big economic hole.”

His warning came as a ‘hung’ Parliament seemed the most likely possibility with the Liberal Democrats playing a pivotal role in negotiations on forming a Government. Electoral reform is one of the key polices that distinguish the Lib Dems from the other two main political parties.

ELECTION 2010: You Decide

UPDATE: Graham Stuart on BBC Radio Humberside reported at 12:30am from Beverley Leisure Centre (where the count is taking place) that he was “quietly confident” about winning.

There was a 67.2% turnout which was up from 64.8% in 2005.

—————————————-

UPDATE: A polling station officer in Alexandra Hall observed that more people had voted (by 1:15pm) than would normally have voted in an whole day in previous ellections!

This suggests that, if reflected across the constituency, the turn-out could be higher than the 64.8% in 2005 and perhaps even higher than the 73.1% in 1997.

THE POLLS HAVE JUST OPENED (7.00am) in the General Election in what the media is saying could be the closest in a generation!

The earliest indication of how people have voted will come at 10:00pm, when polling stations close and any exit polls are released.

General Election Thursday 6th May 2010: Manifesto helping you decide?

THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA has stated that the General Election at a national level will be a close run affair. And it is far from clear whether any single party will win a majority of the 650 seats up for grabs on election day Thursday 6th May 2010.

In Beverley and Holderness then voters have to make up their minds based on what they know of the candidates and the party policies they represent.

During the last few weeks the Hedon Blog has attempted to report on the campaign and hopefully provided some useful background information.

The entries listed at the Election 2010 is a record of the campaign from this small corner of the World. The views of the Candidates themselves have been articulated in the post Who to vote for.

This post fills the gap. It contains links to the party manifestos and will be useful for those who want to find out more about each party’s policies (with the exception of Ron Hughes the Independent).

Finally, many thanks to the candidates for their contributions and hard work during this campaign to win the hearts and minds of people in Hedon and throughout the constituency.

Who to vote for on Thursday May 6th? Candidates answer Hedon questions

ELECTION 2010: THE GENERAL ELECTION Prospective Parliamentary Candidates have all being asked the following two questions by the Hedon Blog:

1. What are your views on the building of a waste burning incinerator at Saltend near Hedon?

2. If elected, then what will be the major changes you would like to bring about that would improve lives of people living in the towns of Hedon, Preston and Paull? What difference would you hope to make as an MP?

The following candidates have responded. If you have not already made up your mind who to vote for on THURSDAY 6th MAY and who ought to represent us in Parliament, then these responses just might help you make up your mind!

Click each candidate’s image to see their responses:

Two other candidates are standing in the Beverley and Holderness Constituency; Andy Horsfield of UKIP and Ron Hughes an Independent. Their responses will be added here if received.

Local Election Candidates survey on key issues

ELECTION 2010: THE WEBSITE  TheyWorkForYou.com normally follows the activitires of our MPs; everything they say in parliament, all their interests, which votes they bother to turn up for, and much more. However, during the General Election they have carried out a survey of local election candidates.

It was unfortunate that only three of our local candidates have responded to the survey, but even so the ‘at-a-glance results’ make for interesting reading. Those taking part were:

  • Liberal Democrats Craig Dobson
  • Green Party Bill Rigby
  • Labour Party Ian Saunders

Honest Politicians

The Lib Dem candidate Craig Dobson dis-agreed with the statement that “In general, politicians are honest” whilst Ian Saunders from Labour agreed.

Europe

All three candidates strongly disagreed with the notion that “The new British government should begin negotiations to leave the European Union”.

British Troops in Afghanistan

“British troops should stay in Afghanistan as long as they are needed.” Craig Dobson was nuetral on this issue. Bill Rigby of the Greens strongly disagreed. Ian Saunders strongly agreed.

Incinerator

Craig Dobson and Bill Rigby strongly agreed with the statement: “A waste incinerator should not be built at Saltend near Hedon” but Ian Saunders took a nuetral stance. The Hedon Blog will be asking the candidates for further views on this issue.

See the full results at the TheyWorkForYou website. There is still an opportunity for the other candidates to take part in the survey. Candidates can send the Hedon Blog your contact e-mail address and we’ll send the link.

Beverley Hustings – Sure Start Row

Ian Saunders, Craig Dobson, Graham Stuart, Bill Rigby

ELECTION 2010: BEVERLEY MINSTER was the iconic location for our very own “leaders” debate last night (26th April). Some 400 members of the public turned up to see the main party candidates battle it out for the Beverley and Holderness seat in Parliament.

The hustings event was organised by Beverley Churches together and chaired by that group’s Rev Jeremy Fletcher. A series of questions were put to the candidates that had been received from the public by e-mail.

The biggest ‘spat’ of the evening was on the issue of Sure Start. Labour candidate Ian Saunders challenged Conservative Graham Stuart to name which one of the constituency’s four Sure Start centres (Beverley, Hornsea, Hedon and Withernsea) would close under a Conservative Government.

The Conservative candidate replied that no Sure Start centres would close – it had never been the case that Sure Start was under threat from his party. This was just “another example of the lies and scare stories” being peddled by Labour to scare voters.

Ian Saunders said that “absent Tory commitments” had to be highlighted in an election campaign and cited that free bus passes, prescriptions and free eye tests for the elderly were not guaranteed by the Tory manifesto.

The other issues from the hustings debate included MPs’ expenses with Craig Dobson for the Liberal Democrats saying that a fresh start for politics was needed and the current political system was not “fit for purpose” and electoral reform was essential.

Bill Rigby explained his view that the aggressive policies of the corporations had led to greed for world resources. We have “eaten all the fish, used all the oil” and the other parties have led us to “distress on the environment and wars”.

The above is just a snapshot of the debate that took place during the course of two hours.

GENERAL ELECTION 2010: HEDON QUESTION TIME

Ask your question of the General Election candidates…

ELECTION 2010: The General Election takes place on Thursday 6th May 2010. The Hedon Blog hopes to be able to raise issues about the town (and the HU12 postcode area) directly with each candidate.

But which issues? The first HU12 wide issue that the Blog and people are generally partisan about, is:

Q1. What are the candidates views on the building of a waste burning incinerator at Saltend near Hedon?

The next questions are up to you.

Because this is a very busy time for the candidates then it is proposed to ask only three questions in total. The most popular (and the most relevant to Hedon and the HU12 area) will be sent to the candidates seeking their response. The candidates will be asked to reply to each in not more than 150 words.

Complete the box below or e-mail hedonblog@gmx.com to submit your question by
