Capturing the East Riding Competition closes today

A PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION organised by the East Riding’s Cultural Partnership closes today.

Unfortunately the Hedon Blog did not get enough interest to hold its own competition for Capturing the East Riding, however we did get sent photographs from some people. We have encouraged them to enter the competition as individuals.

But in the meanwhile we hope you enjoy some of these images in two different galleries (click):

Reminder – Small Grants available – Deadlines approaching!

COMMUNITY GROUPS in the area might want to note that two small grant schemes are available to support projects and initiatives – but deadlines for the next rounds are fast approaching! See the articles on HU12:

Community and voluntary organisations from across the East Riding can apply for up to £1,000 grant from the Hull City Health Care Partnership Small ‘Health’ Grants Programme. The deadline for the next round of applications is Thursday 1st September.

Grants of up to £500 are available as part of the KC Community Grants programme – the deadline is Friday 2nd September 2011.

Be prepared – Digital TV Switchover tomorrow!

THE DIGITAL TV SWITCHOVER - STAGE 2 is taking place in this part of East Yorkshire tomorrow WEDNESDAY 17th AUGUST 2011.

The existing analogue TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal. If you have Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV you’ll need to re-tune your equipment again.

If you do not re-tune your television set after 6:00am tomorrow morning and switch to DIGITAL – you will lose your TV service!

There is information available on switching at DigitalUK however many people who are unsure about the switchover or technology have preferred to ask people they know.

So don’t let people miss out – check that your friends, neighbours and relatives are switched on to digital!

Photo Contest closes next month

WHAT IS THE EAST RIDING? Answers in a photograph please!

Is the East Riding a series of beautiful landscapes – the picture postcard East Riding? Or is it the people, their activities and their quirkiness that characterises and depicts the area?

These are the questions posed by the East Riding’s Cultural Partnership in their Capturing the East Riding Photo Competition. The photo competition is already under way and the closing date is fast approaching – Friday the 30th September 2011.

The Hedon Blog would love to see images from this part of Holderness amongst the winners!

The Hedon Blog has a page dedicated to the photo contest where you can find out more. And if you wish you can send your digital images to us first at e-mail hedonblog@gmx.com and we can preview them on the blog for you.

If you want some inspiration to get out and about with your camera – then visit the Online Gallery at the official competition website.  There are some stunning images!! … Now where’s that camera?

Digital Switchover – Wed 3rd August and Wed 17th August

THE DIGITAL TV SWITCHOVER is taking place. The existing TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal.

Research done by DigitalUK does indicate that nine-out-of-10 homes in the area have gone digital but thousands of viewers still need to get ready or risk having a blank screen!

Happy Yorkshire Day!

TODAY IS YORKSHIRE DAY!

It is the day when the declarations of integrity should be read in five different dialects from modern English to old Norse whilst facing towards the county’s ancient capital of York.

The declaration commences at the time that coincides with the number of years since the first recorded reference to the three Ridings of Yorkshire in the year 876 a.d. This year following tradition [876+1135 = 2011] it is being published  at 11.35am.

I, the Hedon Blogger, being a resident of the East Riding of Yorkshire declare: That Yorkshire is three Ridings and the City of York, with these Boundaries of 1135 years standing; That the address of all places in these Ridings is Yorkshire; That all persons born therein or resident therein and loyal to the Ridings are Yorkshiremen and women; That any person or corporate body which deliberately ignores or denies the aforementioned shall forfeit all claim to Yorkshire status. These declarations made this Yorkshire Day 2011. God Save the Queen!”

Battle against plague of caterpillars at Spurn

VISITORS TO SPURN during recent years will be only too aware of the spring and early summer invasion of the Brown Tail Moth caterpillars!

The caterpillars amass in such large numbers that they can cause health problems to people. They have tiny hairs which can cause irritation to the skin and can even cause breathing difficulties in some rare cases.

The caterpillars first became a noticeable pest in 2006 and every year since. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) who manage the Nature Reserve has to post warnings to visitors to the Spurn Nature Reserve about the caterpillars. Continue reading
