In East Yorkshire we know the realities. With a rapidly aging population and many elderly people in isolated l […]
- There is nothing better then getting out in…There is nothing better then getting out in the fresh air and having a run on a Sunday morning. I did that this morning. As I faced west with Hull and the Humber Bridge in the distance I begin to think what would my view be like in 10 years? As we head into spring we edge closer to some serious money being invested into Hull with the Greenport development. B […]
- In response to Darrens message about irresponsible dog…In response to Darrens message about irresponsible dog owners, we in Paull have our fair share of unwanted dog mess. This is left by people’s dogs who don’t even live in the village, they come for a walk along the bank and through the woods and fail to pick up the dogs mess. On occasions the owner does manage to bag the mess then leaves the bag! […]

Appeal for new Church Guide booklet
FUNDRAISERS from St Augustine’s Church attended a Hedon Town Council meeting on the 19th April and presented their case on the need for a new Church Guide book to be published.
Dorothy Winter, the Secretary to the Parochial Church Council (PCC), explained how Hedon’s historic St Augustine’s Church had been seriously neglected during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries which meant that fundraising for restoration and maintenance work now had to be an ongoing feature of church life. The church’s architect has estimated that the next round of necessary work on St Augustine’s will cost around £150,000.
One of the key ways that the church communicates with residents, visitors and potential funders is through its Guide Booklets and Restoration Brochures. In particular the Restoration Brochure, which was last published in 2004 (pictured above), explains the historic significance of St Augustine’s and the need to preserve the building for future generations. However, that Brochure is now out of date and in short supply.
The PCC aims to publish a new well illustrated Church Guide book which will contain no names, or contact information to render it out of date. It has approached Hedon Town Council for help with the costs of the publication.
The Hedon Town Council will discuss this appeal at a future meeting.

Hedon Town Council Meetings – April 2012
BRIEF NOTES: The following summary from Jim Lindop is an overview from
Hedon Town Council meetings in April 2012. They are based on discussions from the meeting and should not be taken as any official record. They are provided here for resident’s information and interest.
Skate Park: Plans are to be drawn up and quotes sought for an extension or a total rebuild of the skate park and the possibility of a surrounding mountain bike track down Far Bank.
Horsewell Pond: Following meetings between members of Hedon Town Council, The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and representatives from The East Riding of Yorkshire Council, to discuss the restoration of Horsewell Pond down Ivy Lane, a mechanical digger may be brought in to dig part of the pond to see if the old spring is still functioning and to pull back the pond liner and establish a bund wall.
Other ideas are to construct a series of two or three ponds at differing levels, which if the situation is right then water would cascade from the highest to the lowest level. It is hoped to take water run-off from Market Hill, but this would involve the construction of drains, pipe-work and possibly an interceptor tank to hold any contaminants.
There is a possibility that any amphibians that are found whilst any work is undertaken will have to be located in a small pond possibly within Ketwell Lane School grounds. This will be discussed with the school.
Alexandra Hall: The Council are to meet with representatives of Alexandra Hall to discuss refurbishment of the toilets.
Wild Flowers: It is hoped to plant wild flower seeds within Watson Park and a small area in St Augustines Church Yard next to small pathway which runs from Distaff Lane to Church lane and also at Horsewell Pond.
Town Council: The customer hatchway in the Town Hall is to be refurbished and also the Hedon Shield which hangs under the Hedon Beacon on Market Hill
This coming Thursday 19th April at 7pm until 7.30pm, is the Public Participation meeting. Anyone living within the Town, may raise any issue of interest or concern with regards to matters in Hedon.
Residents are advised that if they have any concerns that they want to discuss or place before the Council, they should contact one of the councillors or the Town Clerk at the Town Hall, all contact numbers and email addresses are on the Hedon Town Council website.
The Town Hall is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Town Council Newsletter Matters – March 2012
THE LATEST newsletter from Hedon Town Council has recently been circulated with the March 2012 edition of the Holderness Heartbeat.
There are some interesting asides included. One of which refers to the new signage recently put in place by Hedon Green Print. It appears that the new boards placed on their Market Place premises need planning permission – and the local print shop is unlikely to obtain this. The new signs are not in keeping with the requirements of the Hedon Conservation Area (pdf).
In November 2010 the Hedon Blog commented:
“Local businesses want to attract residents and visitors into their premises. By doing so they advertise their premises in ways that ‘stand out’ from the crowd. Over a period of time a series of bright, modern advertising logos and signs dominate a town centre – and it begins to look like any other town centre in the country! The ‘local’ charm and uniqueness is lost!”
Whilst agreeing with this – it does seem that a balance has to be struck with those
local businesses who wish to further invest in the town centre.
The planning system needs to work with local traders to guide them. Perhaps the idea of establishing a local forum for traders – at the very least an online town forum – is something that could help facilitate this?
Other interesting facts gleaned from the newsletter are:
- The Town Council ‘precept’ for 2012/2013 has been set at £139,780. The precept is the amount levied on local council tax payers to enable Hedon Town Council to carry out its functions and services.
- Parking enforcement officers have issued 24 parking tickets in Hedon between November 2011 and February 2012.
- A petition has been received requesting that the Skateboard park be upgraded.
- The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations have been confirmed as taking place on Monday 4th June 2012.

New Hedon Town Mayor announced
COUNCILLOR JIM LINDOP is to be the town’s new Mayor subject to formal nominations, a notice posted at the Town Hall has declared. Councillor Lindop will serve as the 665th Hedon Mayor from May 2012 onwards.
This will be the first time that Jim has been the town’s Mayor after having been a councillor for only a relatively short while.
He was co-opted to Hedon Town Council in July 2010 and then elected in May 2011. He has since served as the Deputy Mayor (pictured here with wife Sue).
Jim has lived in Hedon all his life. He was a firefighter and Training Officer with Humberside Fire and Rescue before retiring in 2007.
He will be formally installed as Mayor on Thursday 17th May at the Mayor-Making ceremony after which the first task of any newly installed Hedon Mayor will be the traditional Hedon Penny Throwing event.
The Hedon Blog is particularly delighted at Councillor Lindop’s proposed appointment. He has regularly contributed to the discussion and comments on the Blog since it first started in 2009. And since being co-opted as a councillor has regularly provided Blog readers with his personal notes of meetings and announcements from Hedon Town Council (see some of these under Council News).
Jim has also been a very ‘hands-on’ Councillor – from volunteering to clear snow with the council’s new salt/grit spreading machine during the Big Freeze 2010, to picking up a shovel to help dig out weeds from Horsewell Pond just last week.
The new Deputy Mayor proposed for the year from May 2012 will be Councillor John Dennis.

Horsewell Pond update

The bullrushes, reeds and weeds have been cleared using an industrial strimming machine.
