Regeneration Interviews

A CAMERA CREW from Olive Media visited Hedon yesterday to interview people about their thoughts and expectations on the ‘renewables regeneration’ being promised by the new Wind Farm manufacturers moving into the region.

The three-strong team, an interviewer, camera operator and an outreach-person, were acting on behalf of a consortium of clients who wanted to assess the views of local people regarding the impacts of the new Siemens factory and Green Port Hull initiatives.

A small queue of people formed to give their opinions. Olive Media have said they will send a copy of the completed DVD produced to HU12 Online.

Wednesday Writings – Hessle Road

HESSLE ROAD by David Osgerby

He had two tattoos. An anchor. And I love Mum.
He was from Hessle Road. And of that he was proud.
She was not well-educated, but she wasn’t dumb.
She wore rollers in her hair, and My God she was loud.
Hessle Road. And proud of it. as were most.
And the kids played red rover in the road.
For this was a community that didn’t boast.
Trawlermen. Bobbers. They had a code.
The Boulevard rang with their passionate voices.
On Saturday nights they let their hair down.
On Hessle Road, few were the choices,
but it was the beating heart of the town.
And the kids played red rover in the road.
The pubs? They were many, and always full.
The smell of fish hung in the air.
This was not a place you could ever call dull.
Wear a Rovers scarf? You wouldn’t dare.
Then the tide turned, and the trawlers were gone.
The heart of the place was just ripped out.
But Hessle Road? Well, it just carried on.
And always will. Let there be no doubt.
And the kids played red rover in the road.

Rennardsons News – Come and browse and chat with us!

THE HEDON BLOG is always keen to shout out for local businesses in the town. We obviously feature the local pubs and churches quite a lot because these are centres of our local community where people choose to gather.

However, the Hedon Blog think it’s important not to forget that the local shops are also essentially crucial community meeting places. We were reminded about this back in March 2012 when Rennardson News on New Road, Hedon asked to be included in our Business Directory.

“We are an up and coming local store that aims to keep growing and improving in the local community and be part of Hedon. We sell a range of products from Yorkshire Milk and sandwiches to slush to ice-creams to newspapers all for affordable prices. We are part of Shop Locally and have got some fantastic prices on well-known brands, come and browse and have a chat with us – a local business.”

So this is a shout-out for Rennardson’s and all our other local traders out there! Please do support our retail community centres! Browse, chat – and buy! :-)

Hedon Penny Throwing 2012

IT WILL BE RAINING PENNIES in Hedon next week when the new Town Mayor throws the pennies to local children!

Hedon Penny Throwing from 2010 with Councillor Brenda Goldspink

Councillor Jim Lindop will be formally appointed as the 665th Mayor of Hedon at the ‘Mayor-making’ ceremony at the Town Hall on Thursday 17th May 2012 – and in keeping with tradition his first official act will be to lead the proceedings at the Hedon Penny Throwing event.

The Penny Throwing event is one of the most peculiar events in Hedon’s civic calendar. Steeped in history, it is a parody of the days when Hedon was a ‘rotten borough’ with people being offered money to vote for a particular Mayoral candidate. Following their appointment the incumbent Mayor would pay-off his supporters.

Today the event is a real fun occasion with children being thrown pennies by the new Mayor and civic leaders.

Children should get to Hedon Town Hall for 7:00pm.
