Police Appeal – Smoke grenades stole in Burglary at Ottringham

HUMBERSIDE POLICE are appealing for information following a theft from a commercial business in Ottringham.

The theft occurred between midnight on Monday 9th May and 10:00am on Tuesday 17 May 2011 when someone broke into the Woolaball Paintball centre and stole several items including:

- 15 x camouflage smoke grenades
– 6x 20 ounce paintball gun gas canisters

The smoke grenades are approximately the size of a Red Bull can with the words ‘Camouflage Smoke Grenade’ written vertically down the side in black lettering. On the rear are brief instructions from the manufacturer ‘Octavius Hunt’.

The items produce a wall of thick mustard coloured smoke which is emitted for approximately 30-40 seconds. This device burns at extremely high temperature and can cause significant burns if handled incorrectly. They also pose a risk of fire due to them being powered by an intense flame.

Detectives investigating the burglary are appealing for anyone that may know the whereabouts of these items to come forward and would request the holders of these items not to handle them but to contact police to safely remove them.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 quoting crime reference 1835439.

New Hedon Mayor throws the pennies!

NEW TOWN MAYOR COUNCILLOR ANN SUGGIT threw the first pennies in the traditional Hedon Penny Throwing ceremony. The throwing of the pennies – and the odd 50p I’m told – is always the first act of the Town’s first citizen following being ‘made Mayor’.

This also caught my eye – was the new Mayor checking with the Town Clerk that the supply of Mayoral pennies was sufficient to keep the children happy?

Hedon Penny Throwing 2011 - Discussion

And this was an overheard conversation: Sergeant of the Mace, Dave Young, was explaining that the ancient ceremonial Mace was even older than he was!

Finally – the pose for the official photograph of the new Mayor Councillor Ann Suggit,  Deputy Mayor Councillor Jim Lindop and the Mayoress and Deputy Mayoress, Sergeant of the Mace and the Town Clerk:

Hedon ‘Mayor Making’ Meeting – Who will be the next Hedon Mayor?

HEDON TOWN COUNCIL holds its Annual Meeting tomorrow (Thursday 19th May 2011) when the new town Mayor and Deputy will be elected by Councillors and invested with the Mayoral Robes and Chain of Office.

It is not clear at this stage who the 664th Mayor of Hedon will be. The next in line for Mayor was due to be David Thompson – but he did not get elected in the recent elections on Thursday 5th May.

The first  public act of the new Mayor is usually the traditional ‘Penny Throwing’ ceremony from the steps of the Town Hall.

The  Town Council meeting starts at 6:45pm so the first public sighting of the new Mayor is likely to be around 7:15pm.

Hedon (?) and Holderness in the Domesday Book

DOMESDAY MAP is a website that is attempting to bring to the internet the first ever online copy of the Domesday Book of 1086.

Twenty years after the Norman Conquest of 1066, William the Conqueror ordered the Domesday Inquest. Its purpose was to discover how his conquered territories were occupied, and with what sort of people, how much each had, and how much it was worth. He wanted to know what land or livestock existed, and crucially for William what taxes he ought to have each year!

One of 2 entries for Preston

The resulting Domesday Book was the first ever record of life in England and has been the primary source for several centuries of English history.

The Domesday Map website declares that it is a project “in its very early stages”. They have created a map of the settlements shown in the Domesday Book. You can search for places near you, and see their population, size and owners in 1086.

Hedon is not mentioned in the Domesday Book. It is possible that it was specifically created by the Normans as a port for Holderness. Another suggestion is that the settlement was included under another name –  perhaps one of those listed below.

There are 12 settlements in this area included in the Domesday Book (click each entry to visit the Domesday Map website):

Newton [Garth]
Preston
Nuthill
Thorn[gumbald]
Paull
Camerton [Hall]
Skeckling
Burstwick
[Paull] Holme
Marfleet
[South] Skirlaugh
Bilton

Note: The Domesday Book was transcribed and geocoded during the 1990s by a team led by Professor John Palmer at the University of Hull. The Domesday Map website was built in 2010 using that freely available academic data.
