BP RUFC – East Yorkshire (Division 2) Merit League Final Winners

BP RUGBY UNION FC who play at Eastsides, formally Salt End Sports Field,
travelled to Driffield on the 25th April to play Scarborough in the East Yorkshire Division 2 Merit League Final 2011.

Scarborough started the better side and scored the opening try, their Fijian full back converted: 7-0 down.

BP moved forward with the pack heading the charge with Rich Scott forcing his way over but the kick was missed.

BP again pushed forward and, following a break and line out, Jon Barratt scored a try driven over with help from the forwards, Ben Newton converting.
Scarborough came back with the half time score 14-12 in their favour.

At the start of the second half Scarborough came back into the game and
after a quick tap penalty slipped through for a try which was converted. Two
penalties for BP and one for Scarborough left BP 24-18 down.

With time slipping away BP forced wave after wave of attack towards the opposition’s line, Jon Barratt, Ben Glover and Rich Scott pounding away at the Scarborough defence, all to be denied.

With 3 minutes to go Vice Captain Adam Lindop secured the ball and barged over the top to score. With the pressure on, Ben Newton converted to put BP 25-24 in the lead.

Defending with spirit, heart and passion the whistle finally went and the team and its supporters erupted for a great win.

Final score – BP RUFC: 25  Scarborough IV: 24. Man of the Match: Tom Brewer. See the winner’s website: BP RUFC

Jim Lindop – Independent candidate for Hedon Town Council

JIM LINDOP - who has been a stalwart supporter and contributor to the Hedon Blog, including submitting his regular personal reports of Town Council meetings – is standing for election to the Hedon Town Council and asks for your support next Thursday 5th May:

I have lived in Hedon all my life. Married to Sue with three children and two grandchildren. After leaving South Holderness School I worked as a Coppersmith at BP Chemicals until 1975, joining Humberside Fire and Rescue Service as a firefighter at East Hull, then Fire Safety, Training and in Staff at Brigade Headquarters then Station Commander of Bridlington, Driffield and Sledmere, then as the Deputy Brigade Training Officer before becoming a Group Manager responsible for Recruitment and Discipline. I retired in 2007.

I have been on the Hedon Town Council for the past year. I want to see our historic and ancient Town vibrant, safer and cleaner. Hedon is a Market Town of great character, with a good reputation, that with your help and support we need to maintain and improve its appearance and its special character. To achieve this we need to encourage and support commercial activity, ensure signage, shop fronts and development is in keeping with the character and ambience of Hedon, particularly within the conservation area. I support the idea of restoring Hedon Haven, surrounded by a park, also the re-establishment to its former state of Ivy Lane pond.

I want the decisions about Hedon to be made by the residents of Hedon, not a council who sit in Beverley. The development of housing should be in keeping with the character of the Town, in the correct place and not too extensive.

We need to listen and communicate better with the residents of Hedon. We need better flood defences, to be vigilant against proposals such as the incinerator and Hulls park and ride schemes and although difficult we need to improve and increase the parking within the town and keep it free.

Therefore I ask for your support and vote at the forthcoming elections for Hedon Town Council.

Thank You Jim Lindop

“Blame and claim” culture prevents flowers being placed on grave

A GRIEVING MOTHER has been told that she should not lay flowers on her daughter’s grave in Hedon cemetery.

The BBC reports that Hedon Town Council has written to Karen Betts saying that she cannot put tributes on daughter Hayley’s grave and flowers should only be put in containers placed at the headstone base, and memorials should be removed from the grave.

Hayley, died of cancer over a year ago aged only 19. Her funeral was attended by her many friends from South Holderness.

The BBC quotes a statement sent by Hedon Town Council:

“This new section of the cemetery is maintained as a ‘lawn’ area and rules state that a headstone can only be erected on the plot and flower containers are to be set within the headstone base. Hedon Town Council apologises for any distress that a request to remove any additional memorials may cause, however, in this era of ‘blame and claim’ culture the Hedon Town Council must safeguard itself and subsequently its residents and council tax payers from any potential costly claim.”

Mrs Betts is quoted as saying that she cannot afford to buy the containers necessary to hold the floral tributes.

This seems to be a tragic case where health and safety legislation ‘prevents’ good things from happening, rather than ‘safeguards’ against the risk of bad things happening.

It is a case that surely can be solved through support and help being offered to Mrs Betts rather than just the formal, official council line!?
