Hedon Blog Newsletter – an online collaboration

THE HEDON BLOG is to produce a newsletter.

The Hedon Blog News will be an online publication that can be downloaded by anyone with a computer. There will also be a limited print run of 250 copies that will be distributed to local pubs, shops and public buildings, but its main circulation will be achieved through e-mail, Facebook and Twitter and embedding on other websites.

This will be like no other publication, because it will be planned and designed in full public view and people will be able to collaborate in its production, through taking part in the Hedon Blog News Wiki (to find out what a Wiki is, watch the video below).

The articles will be written on the Wiki and photos and images uploaded to it. Those that wish to contribute and play a part, can do so by joining the Wiki and becoming collaborative authors and editors.

Whilst this is a very different and exciting way to produce a newsletter, it will only be as good as the material contained within it. So we appeal to readers, individuals and local groups to continue to send the Hedon Blog your news, information and community notices. Additionally, there will be opportunities to advertise in the newsletter which will subsidise the printed copies of the newsletter.

To be included in the newsletter you must submit your material by Friday 4th March 2011. It will be published on Monday 14th March, so any notices should be for events after that date.

To get involved and find out more information then visit the Hedon Blog News Wiki.

If this trial works, then Hedon Blog News could be a regular monthly publication.

In the Gazette… Feb 17th 2011 edition

THE HOLDERNESS GAZETTE this week continues to serve up an interesting mix of news from south Holderness and the east coast.

The following stories particularly caught our attention:

  • Hedon Insurance makes the surprising claim that people are switching off from comparison websites, preferring instead to meet face-to-face with advisers. It seems the sheer range of websites available is confusing many people…
  • Community First Responders in the Hedon area have benefited from £100 raised by the Holderness Lions through their Santa’s Sleigh fundraising drive at Christmas…
  • Sadly, the Gazette reports the demise of the Roos Rooster community newsletter which is closing after 25 years due to the retirement of its key editors…
  • Look carefully at the new BBC Drama South Riding on Sunday and you might realise that some scenes were shot in the Sunk Island and Withernsea areas…

Get your copy of the Holderness Gazette from local newsagents – you’d miss this truly local paper if it wasn’t here!!

Beating Austerity? – Eating and Drinking Out in the area

AS PEOPLE TIGHTEN THEIR BELTS in the age of austerity, certain luxuries have had to go out the window.

According to new research referred to by the Big Hospitality website, almost two-thirds of consumers plan to cut back on eating and drinking out this year.

Food and grocery research surveys indicate that 61% of consumers plan to spend less on eating and drinking out as their incomes come under increasing pressure from rising costs. Another survey tells us that 42% of drinkers are spending less in the pub than 6 months ago.

So what are restaurants and bars doing in Hedon, Preston and Paull to try to beat austerity and get people munching and supping? Are you offering discounted service? Or special promotions? Is business that bad that you need and rely on the support of loyal and local customers? Or are you bucking the trend and is business okay?

Customers – what are your experiences in the area? Which venues have encouraged you to spend?

Let the Hedon Blog know. We are doing a feature on Beating Austerity in HU12 and want to collect stories from local businesses and customers. The feature will highlight local concerns and promote local efforts to improve matters.

The feature will appear in our business pages. Complete the form below with your story or e-mail us at hedonblog@gmx.com

“Big Society” volunteers sought for Cricket Club!

LOVE HIM OR HATE HIM, you’ll have heard about David Cameron’s ideas on the Big Society. Well, according to this message from the South Holderness Cricket Club, they were here first! The Hedon based Club is looking for people to help out:

South Holderness Cricket Club was established in 1882 and is solely run by volunteers. We are always on the lookout for people with skills and the time to help out, either on a small or large-scale.

We currently have a few specific roles that need filling – Club Photographer, PR & Media Officer, Treasurer and Secretary. If you have a spare couple of hours a week/month and can help out, or know someone who can – please get in touch, even if you could only do part of the role.

We would love to hear from you also if you can offer other skills not specific to these roles such as organisation & secretarial skills/gardening/hedge trimming/painting/making teas/fundraising/organising events, etc, the list goes on!

We are also supporting the v-cricket England Cricket Board (ECB) initiative, that rewards 16-25 year olds for any volunteering hours they do with certificates, excellent support for your CV and most importantly free polo shirts/hoodies depending on the hours you do! (See the ECB website)

We currently run two senior teams and five junior teams. We are working towards Clubmark, which is a cross sports quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections, to ensure that clubs operate to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted minimum operating standards. We have also just become a Focus Club, meaning that we are committed to providing a safe, effective and child friendly Club, working with the ECB, Yorkshire Cricket Board and local schools to provide high quality coaching.

All of this requires organisation and monitoring to ensure we maintain the focus on our commitments to the schemes.

Thanks from:
Neal Everingham – Chairman (neal_everingham@yahoo.co.uk
Wendy Everingham – Club Welfare Officer/Coaching Coordinator
All the current volunteers at SHCC.
