Did you feel the Earth move?

THE BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY have reported an earthquake at 9:03pm last night (3rd January 2011) with its epicentre located near Ripon, North Yorkshire. Many people throughout the region have reported having felt this event which had a magnitude of 3.6.

DID YOU KNOW... earthquakes are not uncommon in the UK. Between 20 and 30 are felt in the UK each year. The largest recorded British earthquake was in 1931 and occurred offshore near Dogger Bank. It had a magnitude of 6.1 but caused very little damage. The last major one felt in Hedon was in 2008 – the quake had its epicentre near Market Rasen in Lincolnshire and had a magnitude of 5.2 and was felt as far away as Aberdeen!
