UPDATE – Planning for Hot Food Take Away, Hedon Market Place

Noise and smells?

THE PLANNING APPLICATION to open a new hot food take-away in Hedon Market Place, presumed to be a Chinese, has run into some serious objections.

As well as significant opposition from Hedon Town Council who object on the grounds of:

  • inadequate parking and servicing
  • noises and disturbances
  • disturbances from smells
  • affects on the Hedon conservation area
  • traffic generation

The East Riding Council’s own Environmental Health Officer (EHO), Jonathan Smith, has also recommended refusal of the planning application. The EHO is concerned that odours and noise from the kitchen, which would be channelled through to the rear of the building via an external flue, would affect nearby residential properties.

“On the basis of the potential to create odour and noise I feel that there is sufficient concern that this proposal would lead to a loss of residential amenity for occupiers of nearby residential property and therefore I would wish to recommend refusal of the application.”

Whilst this in itself does not mean that Council planners will refuse the application – it could still be accepted with an agreement to improve the flue extraction system being proposed – it does seem a big obstacle to the current proposal.

The latest expiry date for “neighbour consultation” is Wednesday 2nd February. Enter the East Riding’s Public Access website and enter Planning Application number 10/05104/PLF to see more details.

Query – The Dog and Duck Pub, Hedon

CAN ANYONE HELP BOB? Apparently, according to Issue 10 of the Hedon Newsletter, the Dog and Duck stood in the Market Place, Hedon but closed during the Great War (1914 – 1918).

I have been researching my ancestry and find that, according to the 1911 Census, my Great Grandfather (Thomas Hanson Born 1851) was the Publican at the Dog and Dock Public House, Hedon.

I would be interested to know any history of the pub and if there are any photographs of the public house (which closed during the First World War) which I could obtain copies of.

Regards, Bob Mason. Peterborough.

Paull: Plans for new £350,000 village Hall approved by local community

NINETY SEVEN (97) PEOPLE ATTENDED a public meeting in Paull last night and voted unanimously for the plans for a new £350,000 Village Hall.

Village Hall Committee Chairman Paul Cross described the plans for the new hall which includes the realisation of an idea, suggested by a local resident, of a second level viewing gallery where spectacular panoramic views of the River Humber would be enjoyed.

The turnout for the meeting – from a village of around 500 people – shows the commitment of the local villagers to the idea of a new hall as a focal point for their local community.

Fundraisers in Paull have already raised £5,000 towards the project and this was boosted by a further donation of £30,000 from a local charitable trust fund. This funding from local community sources will serve as “match funding” making the project a viable proposition to those major funders being approached for support.

Congratulations also to the Paull community on the launch of their new Village Hall website where a report on the meeting can be found.

A Hedon Creative Writing group?

FOLLOWING SUCCESSES in its Meet the Author sessions, then Hedon Library is appealing for those interested in forming a Creative Writing Group to get in touch.

Local authors Penny Grubb and Linda Acaster have each met with local people in libraries across East Yorkshire to talk about their work as writers. The response in Hedon to such visits proves that there is a real interest locally in creative writing.

A group of people interested in creative writing could inspire and learn from each other. Working within a group is a good way to enjoy your writing and improve writing talent.

Those who would like to get involved in a Creative Writing Group are asked to contact Hedon library on 01482 897651 for more information or e-mail hedon.library@eastriding.gov.uk
