History Pin of Hedon – Exciting Potential!?

HISTORY PIN is a website that aims to show how places have changed through photographs and stories. The following video explains more:

Have a look at History Pin. Yes – you will probably find it a bit difficult to use at first – it’s a bit clunky and irritatingly there’s a lack of instructions! But persist, and I’m sure that you will agree that the website has great potential!

The website links to Google Street View and lets you superimpose old images of a place with the current images captured by the Google camera cars.

For a place like Hedon, where the history of the place has been captured in thousands of old photos, this opens up lots of possibilities! Imagine being able to chart the look of the Market Place as it has changed since the dawn of photography! Think of being able to re-visit and compare public photos of the Hedon Penny Throwing ceremony from years gone by.

And if local people, the pubs, shops and public authorities all joined in and submitted copies of their old photos – what an amazing historical record of Hedon we would have!

History Pin does have its problems in the humble opinion of the Hedon Blogger – but the potential is there to create an exciting and interactive photographic and story-tellers archive of the town we love!

Have a look at the website yourself www.historypin.com/ – try to find the photos submitted so far from Hedon (only 2 at the moment) – and let us know what you think on the Blog.

Online Chat with Humberside Police Authority Chair

THE FUTURE of policing will be debated in a LIVE online discussion with Councillor Christopher Mathews, the Chair of Humberside Police Authority.

In the first of the Authority’s Big Conversation events, residents are asked to log on to a live chat with Councillor Mathews, between 4pm and 8pm on Monday 27th September 2010.

The Big Conversation will be on the Humberside Police Authority Website at a special webpage for the event.

Join the conversation – it’s the future of police services in our area that is at stake! See background material on HU12. See you online on Monday.

Happie Crappie Tuesday Club

THE HAPPIE CRAPPIE TUESDAY CLUB is the name of a new themed afternoon in Hedon aimed particularly at ‘re-born OAPs’ or ‘not quite OAPs’ according to the publicity.

Taking place at the  Queen’s Head pub every Tuesday from 1pm – 4pm, starting from the 5th October 2010, the peculiarly named Happie Crappie Club will feature bingo sessions, a singer, a quiz, raffle and food.

If you’re not nearing your senior citizen status yet, then never fear because you too can be a Happie Crappie member -  the afternoon fun pub sessions are open to all over 18!

Wardrobe Boutique move

THE BRAND NEW “bigger and better” Wardrobe Boutique has moved to 8 Watmough Arcade, Hedon.

The Boutique takes over the premises vacated by Occasions who have moved round the corner to Market Place square. Occasions moved into premises left empty by Co-op Travel who moved across the road in June this year.

This series of moves is surely a good sign for Hedon’s local economy? Retail businesses are upgrading and growing. Importantly the town does not suffer from ‘empty shop syndrome’ as appears to be the case with larger towns and cities.

Inquest into opera singer Amy’s death

THE INQUEST into the death of Hedon opera star, Amy Black, has recorded a narrative verdict. In such a verdict the circumstances of a death are recorded but without attributing criminal or civil liability to any named individual.

The inquest in Hull heard that the blood supply to Amy’s heart had become restricted by a narrowing of the coronary arteries. The condition, known as stenosis, had developed following heart surgery in June 2009.

The Coroner, Geoffrey Saul, in his verdict stated that Amy had died on 24 November 2009 due to a fatal cardiac arrhythmia, which came about as a result of insufficient blood flow in her heart.

Blogs help people make contact and network

The Hedon Blog was pleased to get a mention on the Talk About Local website last week from Formby First founder and Formby Parish Councillor Sean Brady.

We have featured Sean once before on the Hedon Blog as part of an article on Connecting Councillors, but it is good to know that he still visits ‘virtual Hedon’ occasionally and perhaps even likes what he sees.

Formby is a coastal town in Merseyside and a place that the Hedon Blogger has never visited – but it is almost guaranteed that somewhere in Hedon there will be local residents that have links with this North West location!?

As Sean says in the article “Blogs help people make contact and network”. It would be very interesting indeed to map any local links that Hedon and Formby share!
