Bonfire Night at the Haven

THE HAVEN ARMS TIMES popped through the door yesterday with news that the Havenside pub is once again holding its popular Bonfire Night and Fireworks on Friday November 5th 2010.

This free event has become something of an annual tradition for many local residents and visitors to the town.

However, this time the pub’s posh new marquee will be used for those who also want to enjoy something different on Bonfire Night to follow the traditional events. A limited number of tickets will be sold at £10 per person which will allow access to the marquee where there will be a hog-roast, buffet, live band and disco to finish of the night.

Contact Mark or Alison for more information at The Haven Arms on telephone 01482 897695 or e-mail enquiries@havenarms.co.uk

MP welcomes Inmans flood test work

Local MP Graham Stuart

GRAHAM STUART, MP, today welcomed news that testing was being carried out in Hedon to look at ways of reducing future flood damage to homes in the town. The measures have previously drawn criticism from local resident Jim Uney.

A test rig, designed to simulate the ground floor of a house, has been erected on Hedon’s Inmans Estate. It will be used to simulate the effectiveness, aesthetics and usability of various flood protection products such as removable door guards, airbrick covers and sump pumps.

Graham said:

“As we all know this area was badly affected in the 2007 floods and there was a great deal of damage done to homes.  I am glad the East Riding of Yorkshire Council is carrying out this practical testing and applaud Hedon Town Council for making the land available.  These tests should lead to residents and the councils being better prepared in the event of any future flooding.”

Blog Action Day – Fri 15th October 2010

BLOG ACTION DAY FRIDAY 15th OCTOBER 2010: WATER

Blog Action Day is an annual event held every October 15 that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day with the aim of sparking a global discussion and driving collective action.

Last year bloggers in 155 countries across six continents wrote about the Environment, and turned Blog Action Day 2009 into one of the largest social change events ever held on the web.

This year’s subject is WATER.

“Right now, almost a billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water. That’s one in eight of us who are subject to preventable disease and even death because of something that many of us take for granted. Access to clean water is not just a human rights issue. It’s an environmental issue. An animal welfare issue. A sustainability issue. Water is a global issue, and it affects all of us.”

Join with the Hedon Blog on Friday 15th October and write, post, Twitter, Facebook and blog your views, opinions, rants, articles on this subject!

Spotlight on new book by Holderness author

TORC OF MOONLIGHT is “a chilling story of passion, betrayal and Celtic revenge” written by local Holderness based author Linda Acaster.

“Alice believes that people close to her die. She seeks escape by steering her future back into the past to uncover the shrine of a forgotten Celtic water goddess.”

The first of a trilogy of psychological thrillers set in university cities around the North Yorkshire Moors, Torc of Moonlight centres on Hull and its university. When student Nick becomes obsessed with Alice and her determination to find a shrine to a forgotten Celtic water goddess he comes to realise that history isn’t as quietly buried beneath his feet as he’d thought, and it always repeats itself.

Torc of Moonlight is Linda Acaster’s fourth novel and is being featured as part of a promotion of local authors being held at Occasions in Hedon Market Place until 17th October 2010.

If you have ever wondered what the life of an author is like – the trials and tribulations of researching, writing and getting a book published – then you might like to consider inviting Linda to your group or meeting to give a talk on the subject!
