Paull Scarecrow Festival – a success!

CONGRATULATIONS are given to the community in Paull for staging a successful Festival of Scarecrows yesterday.

The village was full of people clutching maps and snapping photos.

The Hedon Blog favourites, of the 41 displayed around the village, are the two pictured here. For other pictures then have a look over on HU12.

Sponsored Organ and Piano Marathon

MRS BARBARA GRAY will soon be entertaining people with her piano and organ skills at the Hedon Methodist Church! However, this is no ordinary recital – but a fundraising Marathon event!

Mrs Gray will start playing at 9:30am on the morning of Saturday 4th September in the church on Church Lane – and who knows when she will stop!!

If you would like to witness this extraordinary event then you are invited to the church on the Saturday. And of course do stop for a drink of coffee and a scone in the church hall.

Blood reported on Fix My Street!

THE HEDON BLOG has long extolled the virtues of using Fix My Street to report neighbourhood problems i.e. pot holes, cracked pavements, broken street lights, etc.

However, a report posted on Monday, was a bit more unusual:

Blood on the pavement

“On Sunday 22nd August there was excessive blood on the pavement from Lloyds Bank to above the Coop. I returned later a few hours later and no attempt had been made by anyone to clean this up. Although I appreciate that this was a Sunday, I do feel that the amount of blood on the pavement warranted someone from the Council to clean the pavement, even if it meant using an external company.”

It seems that there was an alleged assault outside a take-away early on Saturday night which involved a man being hit over the head!

Needless to say the East Riding Council ensured that the offending blood stain was removed within 24 hours of the report.

You can keep an eye on local Fix My Street issues by looking at the left hand side-bar on the Hedon Blog – and of course you can easily add new problems in your immediate area by clicking on Report a problem and entering your postcode, marking the location on a map and leaving the appropriate details.

Hedon Racecourse Railway

DID YOU KNOW?

As well as its own railway station, Hedon also had a station at its Racecourse.

Hedon Racecourse station opened 122 years ago today on the 24th August 1888 and was used on race days only. Horse racing ceased in 1909. However, the station was reopened almost exactly 60 years later as Hedon Halt station for speedway racing on 14th August 1948 but was last used in October that year.

Apparently, there is still a rail buried in Staithes road level crossing….?

See Disused Stations for more information.
