Cow Gate! “The Cow Case” Drama at Hedon Town Hall

GATE or old English GAIT: The places which command the entrances or access; hence, place of vantage; power; might.

“…no unfreeman (shall) have a Gait on Westlands if there were sufficient Applicants for Gaits by Freeman…”

THE COW CASE, performed by staff and students from the South Holderness Technology College, is a drama production based on the historic records of the campaign to bring electoral and social reform to Hedon which began 150 years ago.

The Cow Case is a one-act play written by local historian and author Martin Craven, and focuses on the struggle between the town’s Freemen and non-Freemen particularly over the siting of a cow gate on the Westlands (now the Westlands estate). The dispute escalated and resulted in the kidnapping of a cow!

The play will be performed by students and staff from South Holderness Technology College, in the Courtroom at Hedon Town Hall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 29th June until 1st July. The performance starts at 7:30pm each night.

Entry is £2 which includes refreshments. All proceeds will go towards the Mayor’s Charity Funds.

The key events which provide the background to the drama, are described at the Down With the Establishment exhibition taking place at Hedon Museum (until Wednesday 23rd June 2010).

Hedon Town Council NEW website

HEDON TOWN COUNCIL has updated its website.

The new design is much easier to navigate and has a dynamic, modern feel to it. Each page has a facility that enables you to quickly e-mail it to a friend or print it out.

The material on the site is the same as before, but there is an updated section on Town Councillors with clear contact details for each. We probably just need to get each Councillor set up with official e-mail accounts now!

Perhaps another useful service would be to include an archive for the Hedon Newsletter (see about Issue 15)  so that copies can be downloaded? Another useful project might be to collect old photos of Hedon to enhance the Gallery section?

Well done to Hedon Town Council – a 21st Century administration!

DID YOU KNOW: Town Criers were the original news broadcasters?

The Town crier would read a proclamation, usually at the door of the local inn, then nail it to the doorpost of the inn. The tradition has resulted in the expression “posting a notice” and the naming of newspapers as “The Post”. In blogging we still refer to a written article as a “post”

Housing in Hedon – a good time to sell/buy?

IS IT A GOOD TIME to buy or sell housing in Hedon?

The abolition of HIPS (home information packs) since 21st May 2010 has led to a sharp increase in supply of homes on the housing market although prices have continued to rise.

In a press release today the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has indicated that prices rose in most parts of England, although not in Yorkshire and Humberside.

Ian Perry , RICS spokesperson said:

Twenty two percent more chartered surveyors reported a rise than a fall in house prices up from 19 percent in April. Surveyors are still reporting house price rises in most parts of the country. The exceptions according to the latest survey are Northern Ireland, Wales, Yorkshire and Humberside and the West Midlands.”

Local Hedon Estate Agent John Dennis in a message to local property owners earlier this month, said:

If you’ve been putting off placing your home on the market because you didn’t want to pay for one of the dreaded HIPs, now’s the time to do it. The Conlibs coalition government have ditched the requirement for sellers to have a pack, so you will be saving the best part of £300 !! You still need an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) but that’s peanuts compared to the HIP.”

NOTE: You can find out about some local property news over on HU12.net (right hand side-bar ‘widget’) and an interesting service on local property prices is provided by Our Property who give house price information based on Land Registry data by simply entering your post code.
