FixMyStreet: Reporting, and viewing neighbourhood problems

FixMyStreet is a special website that allows people to easily report neighbourhood problems to a local council – such as graffiti, litter and broken streetlights.

The website has grown in popularity since its launch over 3 years ago, including its use in the Hull, Holderness and East Riding area. See a listing of all those issues reported to the East Riding Council.

Reporting a problem is easy – you visit FixMyStreet and enter a postcode or a street name and the town or village where you live (example Westlands Road, Hedon). This takes you to a map of the particular area. You can click on the map at the location of your neighbourhood problem and this takes you to a page where you can report the problem and even upload a photograph of it.

Once you have clicked Submit and reported the problem, then it takes only a couple of minutes for FixMyStreet to send the problem to the relevant council.

FixMyStreet is also useful for viewing problems in the local area – and you can even add your own comments and join in with – or start – a discussion.

You can also arrange to get regular alerts by e-mail about problems reported in your local area.

The really useful thing about FixMyStreet is its easy public access from your own computer. It is easy to use!

South West Holderness Crime Statistics March – May 2010

HUMBERSIDE POLICE have revealed their crime statistics for the Ward area.

The average number of crimes in this area has decreased from 61 to 46 (24.5% reduction) compared to the same three month period last year.

Crime levels in the area are described as “Average” with burglary, violent crimes and anti-social behaviour incidents actually decreasing slightly. Only vehicle crime shows a slight increase but still with only 15 reported vehicle crimes in the last three months.

Overall the South West Holderness Ward continues to be a safe place to live and work.

But what do you think?

A New Chair for East Riding health and social care watchdog

NHS Choices image symbolising the role of LINks in improving health and social care

MRS MAGGIE WHITLOCK has been elected as the new Chair of the East Riding of Yorkshire Local Involvement Network (ERYLINk) community network and health and social care watchdog at its Annual Meeting last week.

In her election statement Mrs Whitlock, who states inequality of health, injustice, dictators, prejudice and abbreviations as her pet hates, said:

I have experienced directly the anxiety and frustrations of patients, users and their carers. With first hand knowledge I know how important it is that people feel in control of the care that they receive. Additionally, as a carer for my mother-in-law, who has dementia, I have experience from that perspective too!”

Mrs Whitlock is a retired nurse and previously worked as a nurse specialist in the Health Protection Agency. She is currently a Parish Councillor for North Cave, Secretary of the North Cave Village Hall Committee and a First Responder for Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

Preston Crossroads Road Improvements

The Roadworks have been completed early!

Things are back to normal from Sunday 22nd August.

PRESTON CROSSROADS carriageway is due to be resurfaced as part of a programme of road improvement works in the East Riding.

Work is scheduled to take place on five Sundays (weather permitting) on the following dates:

  • Sundays 18th, 25th July 2010
  • Sundays 8th, 15th and 22nd August 2010.

The work will be carried out on Sundays to minimise disruption to Heavy Goods Vehicles, public and school transport, commuter traffic and residents.

The improvement work will consist of replacing defective/worn ironwork, replacing up to 180 mm deep of existing carriageway surface, some isolated kerbing and a micro asphalt surfacing to footpaths. This will be completed by the reinstatement of road markings and traffic signal loops.

Due to the restricted width of the road and to undertake the work safely, it will be necessary to close the crossroads to all traffic (except emergency services) during working hours. Working hours will be 8am to 8pm. The council is asking residents living within the scheme limits to park vehicles away from the work area during working hours. Access will be via the roads approaching the crossroads. Pedestrians will have access at all times.

During the closure, traffic will be diverted via Saltend, Thorngumbald, Burstwick, Daisy Hill, Lelley and the B1239 near Sandyhill Nursery.

The normal Sunday bus services 78 and 277 will be changed on closure dates with revised arrangements made by east Yorkshire Motor Services (see EYMS Service Information).

Hedon Aerodrome iconic image

THIS PHOTOGRAPH of an aeroplane coming in to land at Hedon aerodrome in 1931 is one of the enduring images of Hedon’s historical link with its airfield. However, many people in the town will be surprised to learn that the aeroplane was one of only five ever produced and yet one of these still survives today!

Civilian Coupé light aircraft heading back to Hedon

Our famous photo was taken by a Hull Daily Mail photographer on Saturday 28th February 1931 at the Hull Municipal Aerodrome (so-named because the land was leased by the Hull Corporation).

It was the first plane, the ‘Civilian Coupé 02′, produced by the Civilian Aircraft Company of Hedon and was considered to be at the cutting edge of aviation comfort and design. Flight Magazine in April 1931 reported:

At the present moment the Civilian Coupé is the only machine catering for this market and it therefore has the field to itself.”

Click the attached images (PDF files) from Flight Magazine 1931 to show more images of the Civilian Coupé. They are courtesy of the The Flightglobal Archive:

It was expected that the Company would eventually produce at least one plane per week. However, in 14 months only five were built and the Company went bankrupt and was closed by April 1932.

One of the planes survived. A Civilian Coupé 02, was bought by a customer in South Wales and hangared at Cardiff Airport. After being stored for more than 40 years, the plane was restored and moved to the Biggin Hill airfield.

It has been confirmed (see Comment below) that this is the same aeroplane as in our iconic photograph? It can be viewed here on: Shortfinals’s Blog at http://shortfinals.wordpress.com/2009/04/02/a-short-lived-civilian/
