GENERAL ELECTION 2010: HEDON QUESTION TIME

Ask your question of the General Election candidates…

ELECTION 2010: The General Election takes place on Thursday 6th May 2010. The Hedon Blog hopes to be able to raise issues about the town (and the HU12 postcode area) directly with each candidate.

But which issues? The first HU12 wide issue that the Blog and people are generally partisan about, is:

Q1. What are the candidates views on the building of a waste burning incinerator at Saltend near Hedon?

The next questions are up to you.

Because this is a very busy time for the candidates then it is proposed to ask only three questions in total. The most popular (and the most relevant to Hedon and the HU12 area) will be sent to the candidates seeking their response. The candidates will be asked to reply to each in not more than 150 words.

Complete the box below or e-mail hedonblog@gmx.com to submit your question by

Good news as Hedon News store re-opens

FOLLOWING ITS CLOSURE unexpectedly in January this year the Hedon News shop is now set to re-open as a General Store on Monday 26th April 2010. A flurry of activity has been taking place installing new interior furnishings and counters into the New Road premises.

This will be good news for all those that regularly used the previous convenience store.

Reflecting on the Hedon Blog

BBC LOOK NORTH will feature a discussion on the General Election this evening (23rd April 2010, 6:30pm) and contrast the traditional methods of campaigning using the megaphone and soapbox with the new forms of digital engagement that are now available using the internet.

The Hedon Blogger was invited by Hull Digital to take part in the discussion at

Interviews at Fudge

Fudge Cafe-Restaurant in Hull and comment on this Blog’s coverage of the election campaign so far.

The Hedon Blog passed a milestone this month. It reached over 40,000 page views. The statistics show that the Blog got just over 200 views in its first month of operation in February 2009 – but now gets almost that many viewers every single day.

So the decision to cover the General Election was a calculated risk. Would local people switch off from politics on the Hedon Blog or would they find it an interesting way to follow the campaign? The latter seems to be the case with Election 2010 becoming the 6th most popular article this month.

Of course the Hedon Blog is always looking to improve its coverage and will offer readers the chance to put their questions to the candidates in a special facility to open very soon.

In the meantime thanks very much for reading the Hedon Blog. And please do leave comments with your views anywhere on the Blog especially if you have never posted comments before. The comments from readers keep the Blog interesting and lively and hopefully can reflect the essential buzz of conversation in Hedon on issues that matter.

Election leaflets delivered in Hedon

ELECTION 2010: THE HEDON BLOG is playing a role in a non-partisan project to monitor election material that is circulated in Hedon.

The Straight Choice is an real-time election leaflet project. The ambition is to create a live visualization of the flood of party political leaflets as they are delivered across the country during an election campaign.

If you have recently received any election leaflets through your door you can help by photographing or scanning them and uploading them to The Straight Choice.

The Hedon Blog will keep a record of the last five leaflets or adverts uploaded to The Straight Choice and make this available in the left-hand sidebar (after the Twitter section). Also available in the right-hand sidebar at HU12.net.

Connecting Councillors – Using the Hedon Blog

A NEW GUIDE has been published for the benefit of local Councillors which encourages them to take advantage of new ‘social media’ (Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc). The Connected Councillors guide aims to help support Councillors to create local spaces for ‘community conversation’ and to help them communicate with the people they represent.

Increasingly people expect local government to provide its services online with the same level of interactivity that they find elsewhere. Many councillors are already interacting online with the people they represent. In fact we should probably expect our representatives to be available in this way.

The Hedon Blogger recently met Independent Parish Councillor Sean Brady who is quoted in the Guide and runs his own Blog at Formby First.

When I started with my blog FormbyFirst it was little like firing an arrow into the sky. I was never sure whether anyone would actually notice. Then the local newspaper started to follow up some of my blog entries. Stories both personal and in my capacity as a councillor started to appear in print. My bowling club colleagues started to comment on the frequency of what was being featured! All in all, in my view, social media in local government have a clear future ahead. My advice is ‘pick up your bow and start firing the odd arrow or two!’.”

So Councillors can blog and provide a useful service.

So what about our local Councillors for the South West Holderness Ward?

If any of them are interested in dipping their feet into the world of Blogging then the Hedon Blog can offer a Councillor’s Page. Each Councillor who wished to, could be shown how to submit an article onto the Hedon Blog. They would have complete editorial control of everything they wished to publish about their activities on behalf of the town.

So… any takers? What do other people think?
