Holderness Grange Bowling Club

RESIDENTS AT THE HOLDERNESS GRANGE Retirement Village have formed their own bowling club and can play on an excellent bowling green right on their own doorsteps!

The club was formed with the help of HICA – the developers of Holderness Grange – who donated funding to buy new equipment.

According to the HicaLife Website the bowling club has proved to be so successful that a third of the residents at Holderness Grange have become members – even though most of them had never previously taken part in the sport.

As well as the bowling green, Holderness Grange residents and visitors also have access to a gymnasium, dance studio, fitness and exercise classes, line dancing, arts and crafts, hair and beauty salon, restaurant and bar, library, and family room.

Bio-mass Power Station: Jobs bonanza V potential risks

THE CREATION OF NEW JOBS is a high priority on the political agenda at the moment. Therefore the announcement by Dong Energy that it plans to build a multi-million pound power station near Queen Elizabeth Dock has been welcomed by politicians from all parties. It has been suggested that the development of the “bio-mass” wood-burning plant could create hundreds of jobs.

It takes a brave person to question the perceived wisdom of the proposed new development and ask ‘akward’ questions. However, John Dennis, local Hedon estate agent, town councillor and HOTI campaigner has done just that.

Speaking to the Hull Daily Mail in his capacity as a Hedon resident Mr Dennis has asked other local people to consider carefully what is being proposed:

I’m sure that the bio-mass plant will be regulated, but it is still about burning stuff and we will be concerned about emissions. There will also be worries over a further increase in traffic, which is a big problem. We would like to see more information and I’m sure it will be at the top of the next Hedon Town Council agenda”

Ian Crummack a spokesman for Dong Energy has announced that the consultation process has started before comprehensive plans have been finalised. The company undoubtedly wants to guage the mood locally and regionally before embarking on a major investment.

The argument in favour of a new inward investment bringing jobs into the area is a powerful one. The production of new renewable energy sources would be another compelling reason to support the proposal. However, John Dennis is right, communities in Hedon need to carefully assess the possible impacts – positive and negative – that any development will have on the town.

Council tax refund telephone scam!

EAST RIDING COUNCIL trading standards service is warning residents to be extra vigilant about a telephone scam, which tries to trick people into giving out their bank account details in return for a promised council tax rebate.

The scam involves the fraudsters calling people to tell them they are owed a refund on their council tax. The fraudsters are very convincing saying they are ringing from the council or a central claims court in London, and seem to already know a number of personal details about the resident, lulling them into a false sense of trust. Crucially however, they ask for the resident’s bank account or card details in order for the money to be credited to their account.

The general advice being issued to the public is that they should not give out any bank account or credit card details to any unsolicited telephone calls that ask for such personal information.

Every year, three million people fall victim to such scams losing an average of £850 each, and sometimes a great deal more.  The scammers are clever, and all kinds of people from all walks of life get duped. If you let down your guard, you too could become a victim.

Colin Briggs, trading standards services manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

Anyone who is due a refund on their council tax bill will be well aware of it as they will have been in contact with either the council or the valuation office agency. If you receive an unexpected call concerning council tax it is almost certain to come from someone who wishes to commit fraud against you.”

Any one affected by the scam can report it to Consumer Direct the Government’s consumer advice service on telephone 08454 040506.

The Council waste trade

£1.2 MILLION HAS BEEN SPENT over the last 4 years by the East Riding Council on disposing of waste in other local authorities landfill sites reports the Hull Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports that East Riding Council has spent £1.2m on disposing of municipal waste in this way since the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme – or LATS – began.

Under the LATS scheme the Council has paid to obtain permits to dispose of waste elsewhere in the country. They have been prompted to do this to avoid paying Government fines for going over targets for the amount of waste they are allowed to dispose of at their own landfill sites.

The LATS scheme enables those authorities exceeding their targets to legitimately dispose of their surplus to other Councils that are well within their targets. Disposing of surplus waste in this way is cheaper (approx £14 per tonne) than paying the Government fines (approx £150 per tonne).

Of course by spending money on obtaining LATS permits rather than paying Government fines does save the Council money, but does not address the underlying problem: More needs to be done to improve recycling rates and reduce the amounts of waste sent to landfill.

The Mail cites an Audit Commission report warning that the UK’s landfill sites will be full to capacity in just six years unless current practices change. But Local HOTI campaigners will be alarmed by the Mail article’s assertion that the region is particularly dependent on landfill, because it has no incinerator.

Humberside Police Authority budget for 2010-11

HUMBERSIDE POLICE AUTHORITY has agreed its budget for policing the area in 2010-11 and increased the police part of the East Riding council tax to just 2.5%. This means that an average household (Band D) will pay £166.47 a year for policing, an increase of £4.06, which is less than 8 pence a week.

In setting the budget the Authority intends to build upon previous achievements and maintain or improve visible neighbourhood policing whilst making necessary efficiency savings.

The Council Tax Bands (for policing) for 2010-11 are as follows:

Band £
A 110.98
B 129.48
C 147.97
D 166.47
E 203.46
F 240.46
G 277.45
H 332.94

Chair of the Authority, Alene Branton MBE, explained:

We have already asked the Chief Constable to deliver some significant savings over the next five years while maintaining frontline policing services, which is what really matters to local people. Protecting previous years’ investment was a driving factor in our considerations, but we also wanted to keep any increases to the taxpayer as low as we could. We feel that we have found the right balance. The Chief Constable’s work in response to the Authority’s direction has helped us to set a budget that will preserve local policing services and help to keep people safe from harm by disrupting serious and organized crime.”

Hedon Harbours Great Ambition!

HEDON OWES ITS EXISTENCE to the ancient waterways that linked it to the

Project Brochure £1.20 donation

River Humber. Hedon was settled as a haven – a safe harbour – for medieval sailors seeking refuge from the perils of the Humber. By the 13th Century Hedon was a wealthy place boasting the 11th largest port in England.

However those former glories are gone and the last remnants of the ancient harbour were land-filled in 1974.

BUT… Hedon is home to a growing group of dedicated visionaries with an ambition to restore and re-open the Haven. The Hedon Navigation Trust has been working over the last 12 years to build support for the Hedon Haven Restoration Project.

The ambition is to enable small boats to once again navigate the route from the Humber and moor at a new marina at the Haven. Using a lock or boat-lift system small boats would pass to and from a marina.

A caravan and wildlife park would complement the marina creating a visitor attraction that would attract people from across the region.

This is the vision of the Hedon Navigation Trust who have already commissioned an expert study that has confirmed the project’s feasibility.

The story of the progress and challenges faced by the project is celebrated at the Rebirth of the Haven exhibition at Hedon Museum every Wednesday and Saturday until March 3rd 2010. Please visit, show your support and give your donation towards a brochure.

We wish these Hedon visionaries well and offer our support and quote American anthropologist Margaret Mead:

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Dr Dobson joins two other candidates who – so far – have stated their intention to fight the Beverley and Holderness Constituency:

Ian Saunders – The Labour Party Candidate
