The Drapers Lane Well

A HOLE IN THE GROUND is causing much curiosity and bemusement in Draper’s Lane. The hole was dug by contractors to Yorkshire Water following the big freeze. It could more correctly be described as a ‘well’ as it is full of water and overflowing into a nearby drain.

Nearly two weeks later the hole is still there – with a notice that kindly informs us that the contractors are carrying out essential work on Yorkshire Water’s network and that this may involve leaving the site unattended.

So what is going on?

Well the Yorkshire Water website reports that the work began on the 13th January and is scheduled to end on the 28th, so we wait to see what develops tomorrow!?

Hedon Catholic Church

Many thanks to Peter Ainscough for this information about Hedon Catholic Church.

————————————-

HEDON CATHOLIC CHURCH is of major historical interest, having been built decades before the Catholic Emancipation Act. Its foundation was laid in 1803 and the church came into use in 1804.

The church is a simple structure and is located at the junction of Baxtergate and Grape Lane. The parish itself extends out into Holderness embracing Preston, Sproatley, Thorngumbald, Paull, Keyingham and Ottringham.

A full list of all the parish priests from its foundation until today is hung on the church wall; it was originated by the late Peter Garvey and has been kept up to date since his death. A history of the parish, by author Dominic Minskip, was published to coincide with the bi-centenary celebrations. There are also interesting historical details in Martin Craven’s excellent history of the town of Hedon.

HU17.net – It’s all about Beverley….

HU17.net IS THE WEBSITE all about Beverley. It is a fantastic example of the hyperlocal genre which looks set to enhance more traditional media in reporting on very local information in neighbourhoods, towns and villages.

The www.hu17.net web manager is Paul Smith a web designer. His daily job of creating websites convinced him that there was very little information about Beverley available on the internet – but not any more!

HU17.net gives you everything you need to know about Beverley in one place! The website shows Paul’s skill as a web designer but also as a photographer. Paul reports with the camera as effectively as with his words.

Just look at this excellent hyperlocal sports coverage from HU17.net on the football match between the Walkington Barrell and Hedon Rangers – which naturally reports on Hedon Rangers going to the top of the league!

If only the Hedon Blog could be more like HU17.Net…….?

Patient Participation Groups

A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN seeks to get patients involved with their local GP practices by setting up Patient Participation Groups (PPGs). PPGs can have an important role to play in helping to give patients a say in the way services are delivered to best meet their needs, and the needs of the local community.

The Growing Patient Participation campaign is a joint initiative run by the National Association for Patient Participation, Royal College of General Practitioners, British Medical Association and NHS Alliance. The aim is to see more PPGs set up across the country.

The two practices in Hedon (Church View Surgery and Hedon Group Practice) do not currently have Patient Participation Groups. If you want more information or wish to get involved then the Growing Patient Participation website has lots of information about this.

Interested in Patient Participation Groups? Then let the Hedon Blog know.

Our Property opens up Government data on House Sales

See property prices for free

THE GOVERNMENT recently launched data.gov.uk to open up ‘public’ information for individual and commercial use.

Very good use of this public data is made by the website OurProperty. You need to register with your name, e-mail and address but then get excellent information about houses sold in your area by entering a post code.

For example; did you know that between 1st December 2007 and 30th November 2009 there were 21 house sales in Birch Tree Drive, Hedon with an average selling price of £132,829 ?

As the OurProperty logo claims, perhaps this is information that estate agents will not always share with you!

Want to know the selling prices down your street? Then register with OurProperty – or drop an e-mail with your street to hedonblog@gmx.com and we’ll do the search for you.

Government Free Computers Scheme

THOUSANDS OF HOUSEHOLDS are being encouraged to take advantage of the government’s computer Home Access programme.

The scheme is designed to boost the educational achievements of children from lower income families and offers the chance to claim free computers and internet access.

Computer and internet skills are becoming increasingly important and in many jobs they’re absolutely essential.

The Home Access programme will provide more than a quarter of a million families with children aged 7 to 14 with the right to apply for grants to buy computers and online connections.

If you are a low income family and in receipt of certain benefits (see Information for Parents) you could qualify. Have a look at the Home Access website to check if you’re eligible for a grant.
