Hedon Blog – Favourite Bits 2009

SINCE JANUARY 2009 the Hedon Blog has featured 376 posts. This makes finding favourites a difficult task, but here we go….

R100 Toronto August 1930

Discovering the town’s rich history has been fun but not that difficult: The history of the town is all around us in its buildings, features and people. I am particularly fond of finding the link between Hedon and a Scotch Whisky.

The implication made in a local history book that Hedon had links with the R100 airship  provided material for Hedon and the Airships. I would have loved to find a photograph of the R100 flying over St Augustine’s Church!

The HOTI campaign against the proposed incinerator has provided lots of material for the Blog and I wish the campaign well in 2010. However my favourite has been Let us change the climate – the odd rant can be fun!

Other campaigns supported by the Hedon Blog include the ERYLINk to improve health and social care in the East Riding and Blog Action Day on Climate Change. The latter resulted in the Hedon Blog being discussed on Radio Humberside.

Another Blog post on MP’s Expenses in May 2009 captured the mood of cynicism that existed towards politics and politicians in light of the expenses scandal revealed by the Daily Telegraph in that month. The article conveyed the message that grassroots politics needed to be re-invigorated!

These are some of the posts that have pleased the Hedon Blogger during 2009. Don’t agree with him? Then let the Hedon Blog know!

And remember! You too can become a Hedon Blogger! See You can help….

WHAT HAVE READERS found interesting on the Hedon Blog in 2009?

Unfortunately, looking back at the statistics does not reveal any great insight into the public’s Blog reading habits and trends although they do show the top posts.

The main ‘lesson’ – if indeed we can draw any from this exercise – is that the content of the Hedon Blog needs to maintain a variety of reports, information and fun items to interest its readers.

The most widely read story on the Blog was the short report Hedon opera star found dead on the tragic death of local mezzo-soprano Amy Black at the young age of 36.

In complete contrast the next most popular post was JigZone Flowers – a Jigsaw! The JigSaw used to be a regular feature on the Blog on a weekend and attracted so many players that it it merited a website of its own. JIGSAW PLAYER was set up recently to cater for that audience.

Swine Flu hit the headlines mid-year and the media frenzy raised public concern about the possible affects and impact of the illness. This resulted in the next most-read post First case of Swine Flu in Hull….

People searching for the times of the ASDA bus contributed to the next popular post FREE bus to ASDA.

Another Jigsaw of St Augustine’s Church is next followed by View local panning applications.

The most popular pages were Hedon Online, the About page and the On Facebook… page.

We’ll have a look tomorrow at what posts the Hedon Blogger has enjoyed writing in 2009.

What have been your favourite bits on the Hedon Blog during 2009?

What new feature would you like to see?

THE  BUTTON MARKED Take-Aways at the top of this page is seldom used by visitors to the Hedon Blog and will be replaced with a facility or service of more use to you.

What would you like to see featured on the Blog? One suggestion is to do a page on the town’s pubs – with a useful guide, bit of history and maps of locations.

What do you think?

Hedon Town Council highlights parking problems at Inmans Primary School

THE HOLDERNESS GAZETTE reports that Hedon Town Council has challenged a planning application to extend Inman’s Primary School for not providing “adequate additional parking facilities”.

The area around the school already has problems with excessive inappropriate and nuisance on-street parking according to local residents.

The Town Council has asked the planning authority at the East Riding Council to put the planning application on hold until additional car parking facilities are made available within the site.
