Friday May 15th was Silver Surfers’ Day 2009. And what a success it was! Don’t take my word for it but read the report yourself which is embedded below.
The Hedon Blog covered the event but perhaps next year we will have to make “Silver Surfers’ Day Hedon 2010″ a reality! Have any readers got suggestions about this?
Congratulations to organisers Digital Unite! Embedded Scribd document follows:

A local campaign aims to bring ultrafast broadband to one of the most remote lifeboat stations in the country.
The Humber Lifeboat Station is situated at the tip of Spurn Point. The site is a perfect location for the life-saving service to be based and hundreds of lives have been saved since it was first established there in 1810.
The station is home to the crew and their families – a small population of only 29 people. Living at the station can be quite difficult if you consider that the nearest shops are 8 miles away. Most of the services that we all take for granted are generally not available at the site and this includes broadband.
Now Fibrestream have announced plans to bring a fibre optic link to the base to help the families keep in touch with the outside world.
However volunteers are needed to lend a hand in digging a two foot trench to bury the cables. Fibrestream have issued a “shout” for people to come down to Spurn, pick up a shovel and help the crew to dig their own fibre.

Today on 23rd July 2009 a search on the new website’s ‘Anti-Viral Collection Point Information’ reveals that Hull is not listed. Whilst alarming at first, the Hull Daily Mail reassuringly reports that 8 chemists across Hull will distribute the Anti-Virals.
Lloyds in Beverley is listed as an East Yorkshire collection point.
NOTE that medicines can only be collected following prescription by the National Pandemic Flu Service.
For the latest news visit (each link will open in a new window):
There is criticism that the phone and online service will give thousands of swine flu sufferers access to drugs without needing to consult a Doctor. But Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson has been quoted on the BBC as saying it was a price worth paying to help the NHS cope with its “biggest challenge in a generation”.

A “Community Speed Watch” is to be piloted in the village of Beeford reports the Hull Daily Mail. The scheme involves community volunteers playing an active role in discouraging drivers from driving faster than the speed limit through villages and small towns.
This pilot could be a prelude to rolling this scheme out across the whole East Riding.
But remember where you saw the story about local Community Speed Watch first: see The Hedon Blog.

Following initial consultations the East Riding of Yorkshire LINk (Local Involvement Network) is to conduct investigations into two major issues or difficulties:
The LINk has stated that difficulties in getting appointments to see GPs was easily the top issue in most of the East Riding, and has begun the investigation on this by publishing a questionnaire available at ERY LINk News.
Complete the survey and help the LINk get a fuller picture of the issue across the whole East Riding.
