Award for documenting Hull’s Fishing Industry

Arctic CorsairLike many people born in the Hull area I have links to the fishing industry in Hull; my grandad Skadge Hardy was an engineer on many Hull Trawlers. Therefore I was delighted to read in the Hull Mail of the MBE award announced in the New Year honours list to local author and historian Alec Gill and the fact that Alec has now received his award and dedicated it to the fishing families of Hull who he has researched for 35 years.

Alec interviewed my grandparents for his book SUPERSTITIONS about the taboos and local folklore associated with the Hull fishing industry. Indeed two photos of my grandad appear in the book.

So congratulations Alec – and thank you!

The Jolly Great Silver Mace of Hedon

The jolly chap pictured here is the ‘Sergeant at Mace’ and he carries Hedon’s silver-clad Great Mace.

Sergeant at MaceHedon’s Great Mace is the oldest civic Mace in England and is the symbol of the monarch in Hedon. It shows to the world that the town’s Mayor is acting with royal authority. The Sergeant at Mace in historic times would also have the role of protecting the Mayor, but today’s Sergeant is a ceremonial role.

Find out more about the Great Mace  at the Hedon Town Council Website.

Hedon Herald 2004 De-Ja-vu!

Hedon Herald LogoWhat was happening in Hedon five years ago?

A monthly publication out at the time was the Hedon Herald which was published by the Hull Daily Mail and featured stories from Preston, Thorngumbald, Paull and Keyingham.

Headlining in June 2004 was Exclusives hairdressing in Thorngumbald. The salon manager Kim Jumps had just won a bronze award in the National Federation Hairdressing Championships.

Page six carried the startling news that a man brought up in Patrington had admitted being an al-Qaeda terrorist.

News from Hedon Town Council seemed strangely familiar: Councillor Ann Suggit retired as Mayor and Councillor Irene Robinson became the 657th Mayor of Hedon.

Other stories: The Friends of Hedon Primary School were holding their summer fayre; the Hedon in Bloom competition was being judged by Radio Humberside presenter Doug Stewart, while the Women’s Institute members were holding a meeting at Alison Hall and the Holderness Lions were holding a market day tombola.

Have a look at the Hedon Herald which is reproduced here as a Scribd document: Hedon Herald June 2004.

Hedon throwing the pennies away – literally!

UK one pennyApparently there are over 6.5 billion pennies unaccounted for throughout the UK – that’s £65 million pounds worth. 40% of these are presumed to be lost on the street. However, you can guarantee that Hedon’s main street is clear of lost pennies due to the efforts of local children picking them up during the town’s traditional penny throwing!

Pictured is town Mayor Ann Suggit and other dignitaries who share the civic traditional duty to throw the pennies and 2ps to local children. And they really do throw them – I’ll have to video this extraordinary ceremony next year!
