Deer at Saltend/Hull Docks?

Roe deer - a dock deer?

Roe deer - a dock deer?

Whilst travelling on the Hedon to Hull bus one morning in 2004 about 8am, a pair of deer leaped over a fence at Saltend (Hull Docks) and bounded across the main road (A1033) in front of the vehicle. The bus driver jammed on his brakes and traffic behind slowed to a standstill.

The animals, which I suspect were roe deer, seem unperterbed by the traffic as one chased the other to the far side of the road, then back again. They leaped back over the fence and back into the undergrowth.

The bus was fairly full and it caused a buzz of conversation. However, when I told Mrs Duff later that day she assumed I’d fallen asleep and imagined the whole thing! Grrr!

So…does any reader have any further information about wildlife at Hull Docks? Is there still a colony of deer thriving at Saltend? I’d love to know – please leave a comment.

A youth club for Hedon

New youth club venue?

New youth club venue?

A partnership of local services and residents is likely to result in Hedon getting its first youth club open in the very near future.

It is hoped that the new youth resource, possibly located centrally in Alexandra Hall, will provide a much needed facility for young people in the town. The venture will be supported through the employment of youth workers employed by the the East Riding Council’s detached youth team.

The youth centre will be the culmination of a 4 year campaign by a group of Hedon and Paull residents who collected more than 1,500 signatures on a local petition and ensured that consultation took place with local young people. These local residents have expressed a willingness to work as volunteers to ensure the success of the project.

The facility will be funded in the short term through donations from the Hedon Town Council, the Holderness Lions and funding from the East Riding. Further funding will be sought from a range of external funders.

It is hoped that this project becomes very successful and that the town’s younger generation are fully involved in the planning, design and management of the new resources.

The East Riding Council website contains information and frequently asked questions on establishing such projects and support available for voluntary organisations (click the link in this sentence).

Barack Obama Hedon Blog JigZone Tribute

This is not so much a tribute to US President Obama, rather it is dedicated to his social media presence which helped secure his victory to the White House in November 2008.

I recently followed Barack Obama on Twitter and jested “I wonder if he’ll follow me!?” but – absolutely amazingly later – I received an e-mail telling me @BarackObama was following me! WOW !!

Alright I know it’s not him personally; and I know his Twitter site is following 530,000 others – but hey come on! It must surely rate 11 on a scale of 1-10 for Twitter followers!?

You never know – somewhere in the cooridors of world power – someone in the US administration is reading one of the Hedon Blog posts (which are sent automatically to Twitter). There’s a thought!

Alision Hall, St Augustine’s Gate, Hedon to be a restaurant/lounge bar?

alison-hall-grilleThe Holderness Gazette reports that Alison Hall, Hedon’s former WI (Women’s Institute) building – currently being refurbished – is possibly going to be leased out as a restaurant/lounge bar.

My visits to Hedon Museum have informed me that the current hall was opened on 10th December 1931 and was named in honour of Mrs Alison Todd the then President of the local WI. It still bears that organisation’s logo and the motto ‘For Home and Country’.

The ‘grille’ pictured here has been removed during the restoration – it is hoped it will feature in the renovated building.

Any other Hedon websites out there?

The Hedon Blog is encouraging the town to get online – its residents, visitors, businessses and voluntary groups. This will make information about the town accessible to all those with a computer and internet/broadband connection.

But what other websites relevant to the town are out there? Particularly, what online information websites, blogs ABOUT Hedon are there?

For some time the Hedon Blog has featured ‘Geoff in Hedon’ (click image to have a look) in its Blogroll. I suspect that this is quite old – it refers to the town having a population of only 4,000 which was some time ago. It is possible that the website was somebody’s project and love for while, but now lies redundant and forgotten!?

Anybody with information about this or other town websites – or if you are Geoff then please leave a comment.

Popular Hedon Town Councillor faces investigation from East Riding Standards Committee

A former Mayor of Hedon, Councillor John Ledger, is to attend a meeting of the East Riding Council Standards Committee to answer complaints that he did not follow correct procedure – and therefore broke the councillors code of conduct – when taking part in a Town Council Property Committee meeting.

The East Riding Standards Committee, which advises Town and Parish Councils on the promotion of high standards for councillors, will be meeting on April 7th to investigate the matter.

Fixing My Hedon Streetlight

As a promoter of using online services, then I get irritated when they don’t work or yield the desired results!

Following my recent post on reporting faulty street lights I felt duty bound to report one on Draper’s Lane corner  that I came across while out one night.  I think the said broken light makes the area look ‘frightening’ to walk by at night and could even be a potential hazzard to traffic.

Therefore, I duly logged an online street lighting fault report at the East Riding Council website on the 13th March and received a confirmation e-mail in return.

Last night – the offending light was still unfixed. While I appreciate all the problems that the busy street lighting department have, it would still be useful if I knew that the light had been scheduled to have been fixed – and by when.

So this morning – again promoting online services – I submitted my offending faulty light via FixMyStreet where I do have the facility to look up progress on dealing with the fault.

So… as they say…. watch this space!
