Find out about your MP

theyworkforyou-snipThe website TheyWorkForYou.Com is usually my first port of call when finding out about a Member of Parliament.

This is the entry for Beverley and Holderness MP, Graham Stuart who is Hedon’s representative in Parliament. The site contains lots of information about the MPs voting record and interests.

Our MP also has his own website at www.grahamstuart.org.uk

Time on My Hands – Holderness Oral History Project

time-on-my-hands-picture‘TIME ON MY HANDS’ is a set of three DVDs that captures on film the lifetime experiences of over 50 folk living in the Holderness towns of Hedon, Withernsea and Hornsea.

The ‘stars’ of the DVDs are local residents who have been encouraged to tell their stories about their lives and the events that shaped them. With an easy conversational style, interspaced with occasional pictures from historical archives, it is really like having the people themselves sat in your living room.

The DVDs represent only a proportion of over 60 hours of recorded reminiscences but contains a real treasure trove of memories that – if not recorded for this project – might otherwise have been lost forever!

Hear about Hedon Aerodrome and race course, listen to the song about Sunday trips to Withernsea – discover the real life dramas that occured during World War II.

Heading to Hedon Airport?

Congratulations to Lyz Turner from Withernsea Lighthouse Museum for organising the project and collecting and recording these valuable memories. You can find more about the project and see clips via the BBC Radio Humberside website or get information from any of the museums in the area.

You can also borrow copies from your local library.

After viewing the DVDs you might be prompted to get involved with your own oral history project? If so, guidance is available from Harvard College, USA website DoHistory – Step-by-Step Guide to Oral History.

Fix My Street: Reporting your neighbourhood problems online.

FixMyStreet Website

FixMyStreet Website

Finding it difficult to report a problem to the Council? Then ask www.fixmystreet.com to do it for you!

This website lets your local council know about problems and ensures that the problems are reported to the correct department and the right people. You can even check back to see what progress has been made (click here). The service is easy – and fun – to use.

You are asked to type in the postcode, street name or area and then click on the location map to show where the problem is. You are then asked to describe the problem in some detail. Once you have registered your problem the website will contact your local Council within minutes.

Of course you could always contact the East Riding Council Council direct on Report It or Hull City Council’s Report Online service.

Patties – A real Hull dish!

pattiesEver asked for Pattie and Chips in a southern chippie and got stared at by a puzzled face? If you have, just be proud, because the humble pattie is OURS; a real Hull dish. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patties

And did you know that Bob Carver’s sells them in breadcrumbs now!? Amazing!

Hedon, East Yorkshire, UK: Talking Blog Posts

odiogo-logoOur Hedon Experience has now added a text-to-speech service through Odiogo, allowing readers to actually listen to blog posts on the website, and even on iTunes (as well as iPods and iPhones) as a podcast. Just click the button in the left-hand column. Yes… it’s got a US accent… but hey… it’s a free service!

While this is a very ‘fun’ feature for readers, it could be a very valuable tool for the visually impaired and can provide benefits to readers with reading dis-advantages like Dyslexia.

If you have used and had benefit from the service please leave a comment and let us know.

Withernsea Lighthouse

Another feature on the ‘Must Re-Visit’ list is Withernsea Lighthouse.

I remember as a kid going on holiday to Withernsea (pronounced Withren-sea or just ‘With’ by us!) and as the bus neared the town, the first person to spot the lighthouse would get a tanner!

I am sure that I’ve climbed the 144 steps to the top and seen the fantastic views – but the memory is vague!

For more information about the lighthouse then click on the museum website Withernsea Lighthouse.
